Steel Ball Run has an underlying theme about the messages we learn from our fathers. Valentine, Johnny and Gyro are all deeply shaped by the actions of their fathers.
Ironically Diego also is shaped more by the cruel and indifferent actions of his father rather than the loving actions of his mother, despite Diego supposedly doing everything in her name.

Diego’s view that everything is a system with habits reminds me of Jodio’s mechanism philosophy, I wonder if it means anything

I know Diego can walk.
I saw him open the door.
I saw him get on the floor.
I saw him WALK the dinosaur.

Something I don’t see mentioned a lot - it is a nice touch by the author to have his stand literally not being his - he takes, repossesses it from another, kinda like he did with that old lady he married for money, or how he wants to take holy corpse - his whole character is about rather than improving yourself, he boosts himself by stepping on others. He is embodiment “for you to succeed, someone else needs to fail” he doesn’t just want to win, he wants others to loose.

16:17  Diego's loss is very poetic. He suceeds in dominating Valentine the whole fight through his view on exploiting the limitations and habit of Valentine(the way he tries to escspe to another dimension) and his ability(the weaknesses Diego mentions throughout the fight). Valentine kept using or trying to use the ability to escape mortal peril and to his own advantage over his enemies. While its true Valentine's ability can be used for his own benefit to gain advantage over his enemies, its most crucial function is its self-sacrificial ability. Its that aspect of the ability thats tied to his character of sacrificing himself for his country and the idea of nationalism giving shared identity, where one soldier dies, another is made to replace them for the nation's ideals.

If Valentine had one difference from Diego, it would be that he will act selflessly to benefit his something beyond himself, while Diego acts selfishly to benefit his own perosnal desires. Valentine's true habit of self-sacrifice is Diego's undoing. Valentine puts his life in jeopardy in an act of self-sacrfice in service of America by diving under a train with Diego. Even when he dies, his only thoughts and actions were devoted to getting D4C's power to the alternate Valentine before his consciousness faded. His only last thoughts were for America's fate being secured aginst the world. Diego dominates Valentine the whole fight, and then when his dream is closer than ever, and his philosophy carried him to the edge of victory, he loses it all. His philosophy so focused on reducing humans to selfish pigeons, couldn't account for or fathom the possibility that someone would act deliberately in a way that puts their personal self at harm in service of a desire that isnt selfishly benefitting them. Like his mother, Valentine was an exception he never truly had the ability to account for, as his view on humans didnt allow for nuanced, sefless individuals, even though the two people in the train car with him were the two most sefless characters in the series at that point. This blindness that fundamentally defined Diego, was what him led to his demise. He was so blind, that as he lay a goner on the tracks, he soothes his pride by claiming he suceeded in killing Valentine, and by proxy that his way of life triumphed Valentine's in the end. That he was the undoubted superior in the conflict.

Diego: If not as bad, since he’s not focused on the Joestar Bloodline. Like that’s not his priority.

The song Scary Monsters is about a man twisting people (a woman specifically) he meets into the "creeps" he runs from in the streets out of his own self destructive interests
In the same way that Diego, who already was above where he grew up, could not help but grind others beneath him as he tried to vainly escape the very fate he would woudd wind up putting himself in
Its similar to how  DIO in the Main Universe became a predator of humanity due to his drive to not end up like the waste of his man his father was, only to become in truth the same type of people using/disposing creature in his totality

Honestly Diego and Valentine have very similar thoughts on the nature of people. I know the whole part the core themes of SBR is the nature of people and the willingness to change, but almost all characters have some parallels with each other, which is really interesting and very human.

Diego Brando and Diego AU are kind of a strange topic me, since i dont believe Diego SM would do what Diego TW did to lucy, yet i do agree that his a continues his storys themes, cus to me what Diego TW lacks is Dignity, the same Dignity his mother preached and even tho pride were both their undoings, Diegos Dignity left him the spiritual Winner of the Train Fight because to him he kept his Dignity, Diego TW didnt, it was that lack of dignity that made him become the same monster that made him

It's actually really interesting that the napkin speech of Funny Valentine and the pidgeon speech of Diego Brando is, essentially based on the same fundamental idea: the one who chooses first, chooses for everyone else.

This version of Dio at the core is the Dio we all know and love from part one. But, he's born into a different environment where he still has the ambition to succeed beyond the people he will look down upon the same way they look down upon him.

I think the main reason Diego is somehow redeemable and not 100 % pure evil GIGA asshole is indeed his mother.
The actual Dio had NONE of that. He was adopted by the Joestar who were this to him too late.
But both Dio truly were assholes at their cores, it's just that the first one was not capable of love AT ALL. Second one is much more tame in this aspect.

Stand scary monsters is the embodiment of Dr. Ferdinand's soul, while Diego's soul is the embodiment of stand the world.

That last section of the video is beautiful and eye opening. It's hard to connect the dots like that when you're just reading the series, but it just makes so much sense looking at it analytically like this. it's easy to take the wrong lesson away from diego's story, giving him sympathy without fully understanding the failure of his ways.

I like Diego because hes either Good Or Bad, hes Just him.

Pride also undid his mum because the burns on her hands are what ended up killing her

I do wish Diego got closure with his father. Especially when Hotpants offered him the chance.
