The A6 Murder remains one of the most controversial criminal cases in British history.

In August 1961, a young couple were abducted at gunpoint. By the end of the night, one victim was dead and the other seriously injured. The investigation led police to James Hanratty, who was convicted and executed in 1962.

More than sixty years later, the case continues to divide opinion.
In this documentary, we examine the investigation from beginning to end, following the evidence through the trial, the appeals, and the later DNA testing that appeared to confirm Hanratty's guilt. But we also explore the questions that have never entirely gone away.

Featuring interviews with James Hanratty's brother Michael Hanratty, the Hanratty family's lawyer Sir Geoffrey Bindman, first witness at the scene John Kerr, and author John Eddleston, we examine the evidence, the witness testimony, the forensic science and the controversies that continue to surround the case.

The answer to your first question is that people love a conspiracy theory. I understand that Hanratty's family may struggle to accept that he did it, but it's bizarre how some people who have no connection to the case and may not have even been alive at the time will still leave a comment on line stating that they are sure he was innocent. They never say how they know with such certainty. Some people just love to champion a cause, even a hopeless one.

Another aspect of this case is that many of the celebrities involved in trying to get the verdict overturned retrospectively were strong opponents of the death penalty, which is fine and a view I share, but it predisposed them to assuming a miscarriage of justice.

Evidence was given that when he left the Vienna Hotel he asked the way to the number 36 bus stop. The gun was found on a No 36A bus. Charles France said that Hanratty had said that the back seat of a bus was a good hiding place for things you wanted to get rid of. Hanratty stayed in the room at the Vienna where the bullets were found. Hanratty dyed his hair both before and after the murder. He was identified in identity parades on three occasions.He changed his alibi. He was a criminal. He stole cars. Like the killer he was immaculately dressed. Like the killer he had a cockney accent. After the murder the morris minor was driven to a tube station in greater London suggesting London was the killer's home territory as was Hanratty's. Hanratty's DNA was found on Storie's clothing and the handkerchief with the gun. No other persons DNA was found. The case for Hanratty being the killer is overwhelming.

In another video, in Hanratty’s defense they said the prosecution failed to disclose evidence. Also Hanratty was a competent driver.

Paul Foot was one of those 'radical journalists' who insisted on Hanratty's innocence. When the DNA evidence proved it the apologists still refused to accept his Guilt.

Contamination doesn't change the outcome, you can have a mint copy of a record and a scratched knackered copy of the same recording, but you will identify the music/song as being the same.
