In the late summer of 1925, the grim Victorian Armley Gaol, Leeds, in the north of England had an unprecedented four men awaiting execution.  Two brothers who had killed a father of four in revenge for him breaking up a disturbance in a public house; a crane operator in the Rotherham steelworks who chose murder as a way of getting rid of an unwanted lover and a Sheffield engineer who killed his wife after a quarrel and who had then tried to take his own life.  The hangmen were engaged, their appeals against conviction unsuccessful, and as the date of execution neared frantic appeals were made for clemency….
