As a flight attendant of 42 years of flying, originally Pan Am training;  and It was an important rule that none of the pilots could eat the same meal.  We were catered with 3 or 4 different meals for each meal service depending upon how many pilots were on duty and none of them were allowed to eat the same meal as the others just to prevent that very food poisoning incident.

Probably the primary thing people miss in the safety briefing is, don't inflate the vest until you are OUTSIDE the plane. In numerous water crashes, people who survived the impact were found dead in the cabin from drowning because they inflated the vest inside the plane and then could not get to an exit below the water level as the vest kept them from submerging to exit.

In the Royal Australian Airforce, we had a rule that pilot and copilot had to eat different meals when we flew the C-130

As a now retired firefighter/paramedic when I did fly I reviewed all exits and counted rows in case it’s all black/smoke.  I usually had some fire fighters shirt on so crew would ask are you   A firefighter? Safety net.  Same as hotels don’t use elevator in emergency.  Count doors to the stairs.   It could save your life.  Life safety code.  Stared due to fire in Boston killed hundreds.   There has been many other fires that added to it.

Captain Steeeve does all the awesome collabs! 😎

So I did the research about what would happen if a member of the ISS crew had a burst appendix.
There is NO surgery protocol on the ISS, but they can evacuate to Earth using an escape capsule, relatively quickly.
They have one designated crew member who gets about 40 hours of paramedic-level medical training, and some medical equipment, and a medical kit, and that's about it.
In this particular instance, they would use an ultrasound to check the abdomen and verify the extent of the problem. They could use pain medication to make the crew member comfortable and start wide-spectrum antibiotics to cut down on chance of infection, but then they would try to get them to Earth in about 3-5 hours. That's the quickest they can get there. They would monitor the crew member's vitals and be in constant contact with a medical team at their landing site, who would be prepared to take the crew member into surgery as soon as they returned to Earth.
They have had to use this protocol for rapid return before.

Hello Gary B. and Captain Steve.
I've been watching both of your channels for quite some time now and I'm so very grateful. I was a nervous flyer and had accepted that I would not be flying again after I moved down to Florida a few years ago. After watching your shows, along with Kelsey at 74Gear and Petter at Mentour (and even Hoover at Pilot Debrief!)  I've come to have great respect for aviation and the training and experience commercial pilots and flight attendantd have.
I no longer have a fear of flying and I've since, thanks to you guys, booked a cruise leaving from another city I'll have to fly to. The flight is only about an hour but the big deal for me is that I'm actually looking forward to it. Thank you so much for explaining so many things in such detail. I find the aviation industry fascinating and I'm so very happy that now we (the public) have people like you to explain these things to us.
My dad, a Korean War paratrooper, always looked forward to flying commercially, albeit as a passenger. I wish he could see me now.
He would be glued to your channels.😊

Scary thought - "Airplane!" is a documentary.

Food poisoning SUCKS, poor guys!

Problem with crew accommodation - 'British Airways has relocated its flight and cabin crew from their layover hotel in Hyderabad, India, after all three pilots operating a return service to London Heathrow fell violently ill during the flight.'

I always keep my seatbelt on except when I need to go to the restroom, after that the seatbelt goes back on. To minimize having to go, I use the airports restroom before I get on.  When boarding, I always look for the exits and where they are in relation to my seat. I pay attention to the flight attendants safety instruction and I study the card that shows me where the exits are and how to use the escape chute.  I took my first flight when I was almost 22 and many flights after that, the last being when I was 62.  I also make sure my daughter follows the same things because she's autistic and I care about her safety too.

21:44 it's the first thing I do once I've sat down is look to see where the nearest exits are, in front and behind.

A major problem with the pre-flight safety briefing is that it starts with how to buckle the seatbelt, which is ridiculously basic.  That’s where everyone stops listening.  It should start with “keep your seatbelt buckled”, and “leave everything behind in case of evacuation”!

Two perspectives, two different sets of experience...this is the way discussions should happen (rather than an echo chamber!). Really appreciate the show.

Watching from West Texas.

Always be prepared is my motto. Good job captain Steve and Gary B!

On Aviation Humor: Pilot looking distressed. Caption: "When you have 2 hours before you land, but the Taco Bell you ate is on short final" 😅

Watching from North Augusta, SC while cleaning the house. I would never take a flight knowing there is only one pilot!

Watching from Argentina (recently moved here from the U.S.).  Youtube channels like your's have been sooo appreciated while I'm adapting to a different country/culture.  Thanks Gary!

Watching from Johannesburg,  South Africa.  Great show guys.  Keep it up!
