The true inspiration for Basil Fawlty was a actual hotel manager that John Cleese encountered during a stay at a real hotel in Torquay. He was such a distinctive character that Cleese was inspired to use him as the blueprint for Bail Fawlty's persona. The guy had previously managed another hotel in Scotland that my father briefly worked in during his youth. From the way my dad described him, he really was a larger than life and unique character indeed and absoluely rife to be adapted into what we got with Fawlty Towers.
Co-managed from 1979-1997 by Steve Abbott the BAFTA, Oscar and Cesar winning producer from Bradford, where they filmed a lot of their stuff. He's also a co-owner of their production companies Prominent Pictures, Prominent Features and Prominent Television.
Miriam margolyes hates Cleese and Chapman. Hates them with absolute passion. When she went to Cambridge they isolated her completed when she played in the footlights with them. There is something very pompous about Cleese, he tends to look down his nose at people who are less talented then him. He is a genius and there would be no my python with out him. And his legacy looms very large.
