I really feel sorry for people who will never know the greatness that was seeing movies at the theater in the 80's. And the fun of having your parents drop up off with your friends, buying G rated tickets and sneaking into R rated movies. Good times☺

Great score by the hugely underrated Basil Poledouris who also did fantastic scores for Starship Troopers and RoboCop.

"Conan...cannot cry, so I cry for him!"

Respect.

"How the hell?" When Valeria appeared as a Valkyrie, it's just like she said after rescuing C Conan: "if I were dead and you still fighting for life, I would come back from the darkness to fight by your side"

This movie is a film of distinct unique quality never again replicated. John Milius should never have stopped making the Conan series.

The Conan series, originally written by Robert Howard, comprised of twelve books came out in the 30's but many books of Conan were written, at least 35 more by various other authors. All are pretty good, having read them all. 73 year old guy, me.

Conan's father believed that the answer to the riddle of steel was in the steel itself, 'cause it's the only thing you can trust.
Thulsa Doom believed that the solution to the riddle was in the flesh, the arm that wields it.
At the end, Conan appearing with his father's sword in one hand and Doom's head in the other, symbolizes that the real answer to the riddle of steel is the will of the warrior, that subdues both steel and flesh

The theme score is one of the best in cinema history in my opinion. Once the horns start blaring and the strings join in, it is simply amazing.

One of my favorite moments of any film ever, is the few seconds we see Conan and his friend running across the open landscape - free as anyone will ever be. And my other favorites scenes are all of them. Epic movie.

This was the movie that truly launched Arnold into Stardom, he'd appeared in a few movies before, made a guest appearance in a couple TV shows, but this is the one that really got him the peoples attention. Conan put him on top, Terminator showed it wasn't a fluke.

Vassilis Konstantinos "Basil" Poledouris's contribution to this movie was absolutely genius.....a work of the highest art.

"For us there is no spring, only the wind that smells sweet before the storm."

Such a powerful quote.

9:55 Took me YEARS to notice the size difference between the Skeletons and Conan.

Those are "Giants" or at least descendants of Giants, you can see that the hand resting on the sword's pommel is MUCH larger than Conan's how hand, and that the sword looks like a one hander/arming sword compared to the Skeleton's size.

But in Conan's hands, the sword looks closer to a 1 and a half hand/Long sword.

Thats how fucking big those guys are.

40 years later and I'm still in awe of this movie.

I love 80's sword and sorcery movies. They had that dark fantasy grittiness, and novels about Conan are probably my favorite fantasy stories

@majkus 4 years ago

"What century is that?" It's the 'Hyborean Age', a fantasy world that roughly corresponds to ancient Europe, but is supposedly ten thousand years ago. Cimmeria (Conan's home) roughly corresponds to the Cymric people (the Welsh word for Wales is Cymru), and Howard said that the Cimmerians were the ancestors of the Gaelic people.
In other words, this is not historic fiction!

Conan The Barbarian has been around since 1930, and was the first comic book character ever to be released before Batman, Superman, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers had their own comic books.

The time period when Conan the Barbarian takes place is called "the Hyborian Age", which would be arround 10.000 B.C. in our time line.

It basically tells the story of what happened right after what seems to be the biblical Flood and roughly 8.000 years before the Bronze Age Collaps. The intention was to create somewhat of a magical myth of what happened in our own ancient history based on manuscript traditions from Herodotus and the kind, quiet similar to The Lord of the Rings.

For instance, the kingdom Conan becomes the ruler of is called Aquilonia, which will later become Italy (or at least part of it, like it is today in the real world). Conan himself is a Cimmerian, a people that lived along the northern shores of the Black Sea until they got driven out by the Scythians, who came from today's Russian plains.

As someone who collects old folklore and myths himself, the Conan books are some of my favourite - and as an Austrian, the movies as well, of course. (;
