I hate this movie for making me cry. Coco is the most Pixar of Pixar movies in the best way possible and it gave us one of the best twist villains in recent memory.

To quote Carl from Up “I finally meet my childhood hero and he tries to kill us? What a joke.”

Something that also made Ernesto memeroble was that despite everything he has done, he wasn‘t truly a pure evil monster incapable of love. We‘ve seen that he actually liked Miguel when he meet him, spending time with him and giving him a helpful(well helpful in his own twisted way) advice without a hint of gaining something out of it. It‘s also implied that he actually did saw hector as a friend before killing him. The problem with Ernesto is that he will always chose his dreams over the people close to him, viewing it as most important. That‘s what makes Ernesto so good as both a character and as a villain as he perfectly contradicts the theme of the movie: no matter how important your dreams are, nothing is more important than family.

Y'know i realized something, Ernesto never took the Guitar with him, if he truly cared about music like he says he does, he would have. foreshadowing he isn't actually Miguel's Great-great-grand father.

I always remember that Disney tried to have the copyrights of EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS and obviously they couldn´t but still.
Suck it Disney.

one thing i'd like to point out:
it's established that the dead are immune to any form of harm in the land of the dead and the only way to "die" again is to be forgotten.
now, ernesto is also established to be the most famous musician in mexico and the resulting scandal from the discovery that he murdered his musical partner and stole his songs would be MASSIVE and remembered for a LONG time.
that means that ernesto is trapped under that bell for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years, not able to die and not able to escape which is uh, horrifying to say the least.

Something about Ernesto that's rarely mentioned is that, when the story begins, he has already won. He has no real goals anymore, he has already achieved everything he wanted and then some. He could've done literally nothing, and nothing would change.

Don't forget that he already had a bottle of poison. Who just keeps that at the ready? It's like he was already considering using it.

Coco really makes the differentiation between being famous and being remembered. Even though Ernesto is super well known and therefore has no reason to fear final death, on El Dia de los Muertos, he doesn't bother going to the living world.

After many watches and many reaction videos... I think the thing that gets me most about Ernesto, is that he caused so much pain for so many generations of Riveras... when he really didn't have to. He apparently just couldn't bear to share the spotlight. I mean, Ernesto had a great voice. And it's not like singers have to write their own songs. All Ernesto had to do was make an agreement with Hector for his songs. Hector would get credit for the songs and a percentage of Ernesto's earnings while being at home with his family, Ernesto would get to continue his career, and whenever Ernesto wanted more songs, he'd just go back to Santa Cecilia and Hector probably would have more songs ready for him. Win win win. But apparently a course of action that involved sharing credit with an invisible songwriter didn't occur to Ernesto.

The thing that ticked me into him being a villain was the fact ALL his alebrijes are chihuahuas. Imelda has this HUGE winged jaguar that transforms into a cat in the living world, but can easily stay in the shadows in the dead one. The dog gets turned into a silly looking, almost winged seal thing. Both of them match their person's personalities. What are chihuahuas usually known for? Being in over their heads, yappy, loud, and arrogant.

One detail I enjoy is that Ernesto not being Miguel's great-great-grandfather makes sense when you consider that Miguel's journey to reach him feels so unrealistic. Like, if he was truly Ernesto's descendant, then Miguel already gets the red carpet to his mansion the moment he arrives on the Land of the Dead. The fact Ernesto doesn't even specifically mention his family members already puts an unsettling aura to him.
Even more poignant? Notice that Ernesto actively lives alone whenever he's not with famous people or audiences. Everyone, even Hector, has a group they bond with.
The worst of all? Ernesto seems more negative and shocked about being Miguel's ancestor than the fact Miguel is a living boy in the land of the dead. The latter fact always shocks everyone else, including Hector.

Ernesto’s biggest twist is not just that he is a villain but how much of a villain he was, i was expecting him to be a bad guy but i thought it was that he would just ignore Miguel’s wishes and be the usual famous douchey guy, until the reveal hits you like a truck and remember, at that time he STILL thought miguel was his grandson when he threw him into a death pit just because he sided with the guy he poisoned and killed, his main phrase also takes another twisted turn once the reveal is shown, turning from a cute and inspiring phrase into a call that if needed you do not have to hesitate in killing someone to get what you want

Another thing to note is when we first hear about how Hector supposedly died, the other band mentions and laughs about the story of Hector dying from choking on chorizo. Now the reason why the band members find this so funny is because, well, it’s kinda hard to choke on Mexican chorizo. Typically Mexican chorizo sausage is eaten without the outer casing, making it crumbly and soft. Usually people eat it mixed into other dishes or with eggs, so the fact that Hector supposedly died from choking on chorizo is kinda hilarious. I mean, it’s not impossible but if you do… that’s just kinda rough luck there buddy.

Always remember the saying: “Never meet your heroes.”

I think my favorite aspect of Ernesto was (I think) the fact that there was a hint unhinged Disney fans would know. My very first watch, I clocked that Ernesto’s statue had green eyes due to weathering. A lot of classic Disney villains have green associations to them, like Maleficent, Ursula, and Scar. I do miss classic villains, but agree Ernesto was a perfect twist villain

Some of the takes about Ernesto agree weird. He throws away the guitar bc it being full of water would make saving Miguel harder. He introduces Miguel as “my great great grandson” because HOW ELSE WOULD HE?! He’s not me-me-me-ing in those two situations.

@Xandypn 4 months ago (edited)

To me, it was obvious there was something evil about him since the guitar revelation. What do you mean you are this famous movie star and never came back to see your wife and daughter? Under that lens the first time we hear "Remember Me" it sounds like a super narcissistic song—No wonder they hate music! (I thought) I was so happy to find out they weren't actually related; that for me was the actual twist when I saw it in theaters. The family was the victim of an ego maniac, who, in his pursuit of greatness, made something as uniting and beautiful as music turn into something painful.

@ruurtjef 4 months ago

I agree with you however, I don't think he was portrait, as "too good to be true" because after all he turn his back on his family. That gave him a flaw, which made the plot twists even more surprising.

@Solunanotselena 3 months ago

Something I want to point out is you could probably figure out something is off when in the beginning where Ernesto is singing "Remember Me" it says the lyric "Each time you hear this sad guitar" but the song is upbeat and exciting so there should be nothing about a sad guitar. The whole song is about being apart from your love but it's instrumental doesn't fit until you hear Hector singing it to coco with a more mellow and yearning feel. Just wanted to point it out since I've never been able to tell someone because it has never come up in conversation.

10:07 this is actually a double sense joke, the reason why they make fun of him is because “chorizo” it’s like a sausage, which sum people in Mexico use this word to discretely refer to… yk… that part of the man.. LMAO (hope this helps- im not good at explaining in English lol, im Mexican :3)
