Some races are dangerous because of speed. Some because of competition. Some because the margin for error is razor thin.

And then there’s the Isle of Man TT.

We went into this knowing it had a reputation for being one of the most dangerous races on Earth, but nothing prepared us for actually seeing what these riders put themselves through. The speed, the roads, the crashes, and the almost nonexistent room for error had us completely stunned.

This was one of those reactions where we kept asking the same question:

Michael Dunlop is a nephew of the late Joey. Joey (Rip) died racing in Estonia in 2000. His brother Robert(Rip),Michael's dad died racing at an event in Ireland in 2008. Michael's brother William (Rip) died racing at an event in Ireland in 2018. Michael still continues to race

Everyone on that track is there not because they have to, but because they want to. It's as simple as that. I'd only quit if I stopped enjoying my racing. If I wasn't enjoying it, then this isn't the place to be racing. I wouldn't want to be in anybody's position who's grieving, but hopefully they can take some comfort in the fact that the riders were enjoying themselves at the time. When I was learning to parachute a guy in the class asked is it a safe hobby, the instructor just answered why would a sane person jump out of a perfectly working plane . Guess its basically the same for these guys who keep coming back to race there.

i use to go to the Isle of Man TT when i was a kid with my grandad because he was really into his motorbikes. you never realise how fast they are actually going until your standing there and a complete blur goes past you.

I can assure you when you are sitting at the edge of the road and a bike goes by at 200+ mph inches from your legs so close that the wind whips your jean legs there is absolutely nothing like it in the entire world.

The Dunlop family family from Ballymoney in Northern Ireland is probably the greatest family racing dynasty ever. The four racers are (were), the late great Joey (died racing in Croatia), his brother Robert (died racing on his home circuit, the North West 200), Roberts two sons William and Michael, William died racing in the Skerries 100, in Dublin, Ireland, and Michael, the only surviving member of this racing dynasty , Michael is currently considered to be one of the finest road racers on the planet , definitely the one to beat! I live close the North West 200 circuit in Northern Ireland, and any year when no one dies is a good year.

The TT is quite literally the ultimate motorsports challenge.
There's about 15 races over many classes throughout race week. (Race week is 1st week in June (ish)) with a week of practice to learn the course beforehand

It's the Mecca for riders. Some of the fatalities who are public are from riding the course as anyone can ride the course when racing isn't on.

So for the comment about ending the TT, it's a point thats raised yearly.. and I could put it in my own words but these words from two partners of fallen riders say everything I ever could 100x better.. and who else has a bigger voice in it than them themselves..

Natalie Mathison, wife of rider Daley Mathison who died at the 2019 Isle of Man TT, wrote: "We all know how wrong it can go but he would never wish to stop. He lost many a friend and witnessed stuff no one ever should on a track. How he ever got back on a bike I'll never know. But it was his life and his passion."

Janet Cowden, partner of fatal 2016 competitor Paul Shoesmith, stated that calling to scrap the event or "slate" the races would be "disrespectful" to his memory, adding: "There's nothing else like it and I'll never hate something that brought him and our families so much joy."

Ex car racer who has been to watch the TT this is pure racing.

The first thing that you have to beat, that's the island. To conquer the course and then compete makes it even better.

Through contacts I have been around the track as a pillion passenger with a past World Champion a number of times, admittedly I'm guessing at about 70% of his normal speed.

If I could race four wheels there, the house would be on the market tomorrow.

There are corners where you take a deep breath before going in and then you breath out when you're through it on some tracks. There's a deep feeling each time you accomplish it, you've beaten it. That's what riders are doing beating the beast.

The Isle of Man 2026 Manx Grand Prix has been taking place this week (started Sunday, August 16). Two riders have died in qualifiers. RIP Mauro Poncini and Sam Naughton.
