Saying "I have no idea about the World War" is the most suspicious thing you can say as a German, and I say that as a German myself. People are gonna end up thinking you were actually one of the camp guards at this rate :face-blue-smiling:

It basically comes down to everyone being completely exhausted from the first World War and being willing to do anything to avoid repeating it, except the side that felt angriest about the outcome of that war and was suffering the consequences regardless.  A lesson learned from WW2 was don't put your defeated foes in a position where war isn't much worse than peace.  That lesson was applied well in post-WW2 Japan and Germany, but one could argue that the ongoing problems in the Middle East are the result of forgetting all this.  That's why it's important to continue teaching this history.

7:45 China was having... issues at the time.

36:34 the Japanese believed that if you didn’t have your honor then you could not even call yourself human. You were treated like an animal and many allied troops who surrendered to the Japanese were often executed for sport or even the slightest offense.

"Wow, if I had a nickel for every time a world war was started by Austria but then Germany was ultimately blamed for it, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?"

Danke, Typi. Tschüss.

Yes. Thats exactly it. Ww1 was devastating to all involved. They were absolutely trying to avoid a repeat literally just 20 years after that war. Everyone was still reeling.

It's worth remembering that people referred to World War I at the time as "The war to end all wars" because it was SO devastating that people literally thought it would basically traumatize everyone into never starting another war again. Most countries were still feeling the economic effects of the war, the population of Europe in the 1930s was lower than before WWI, and the war was still very much in living memory. Pretty much everyone outside of Germany and Italy were desperate to avoid that happening again which is why they were so hesitant to respond appropriately when funny mustache man was posturing so aggressively.

A lot of the people in charge during the 2nd war fought during the first. I imagine at least some still woke up in a cold sweat because some of the things that happened then (famously J.R.R. Tolkien fought at the Somme for example), so it's not really surprising they really didn't want to do it again.

The pykrete did happen, the proposal was to build the world’s largest aircraft carrier with it. But it more would of been more of a floating airfield. The United States was invited and when the pykrete was shot the bullet ricochet through admiral Ernest Kings pant leg but didn’t hit him directly. Also did not improve his thoughts about the British.

I always appreciate hearing German perspectives whether they know much or not because that along with the Russians we don’t hear much of

The US deliberately DID NOT nuke Kyoto - deemed japan's spiritual heart.  One of the generals in charge had visited it and knew it would only strengthen their resolve.

1:09 glad u escaped the swamp! Welcome to the slightly less dank swamp!

13:15 "I don't understand."

Go back and rewatch your intro. Listen to how much time you spent ensuring that you said "war is bad" as clearly as possible.
Now apply that sentiment to western Europe.

"Germany is invading X. We can let them, or we can go to war."
"Well war is bad. We don't want to go to war."
"So we'll let Germany go ahead?"
"...I guess so? But make them promise not to do it again!"
Repeat.

The idea "war can be necessary" is not a happy one...but it is a necessary one.

38:38 In the short term, he wanted eastern europe, the low countries and parts of western france, but I believe in the long term he stated the greatest enemy after the Soviet Union would be the United States in his at the time unpublished 2nd book, that was written pre-war however.

6:55 funny enough they weren't at the begining. Mussolini was willing to team up with the UK against Germany but then italy wanted to invade a weaker country and instead of stopping them, UK put sanctions on them which made them mad regardless and they decided to team up with Germany.

25:28 yes, this actually happened, and the person it hit was actually Fleet Admiral Ernest King, the highest ranking Admiral in the US Navy. But the bullet didn’t actually hit him, it just put a hole through his pants.

6:16 Correction... Mustachio didn't help start the "Can't See" party. He found them, when spying on political groups for the German (Weimar Republic) Army's Intelligence Department. Due to the instability that followed WW1, the German government had soldiers spying on political groups to monitor them for extremism and prevent uprisings. Ironically, Mustachio found himself spying on a political group that he would end up finding a lot in common with and eventually joining full time after leaving the Army.

I am in love with the way your model's eyes go derp 🌒🌘

D-Day was the biggest Allied invasion in WW2. Hitler's invasion of Russia was the biggest ever, as far as I'm aware, with 3 million soldiers. However, there was one almost as big in WW1, I believe it was the Saar Offensive. Something like 2 million Allied troops were there.
