Why did World War I happen?

This animated megadocumentary brings together my four-part World War I series. We trace the tensions that brought Europe to war, follow the conflict as it spread, and examine its consequences through the lives of the people who fought and suffered through it.

From imperial rivalries and competing alliances to the trenches and the collapse of empires, this is the story of the Great War. But it is also a story about class: while rulers and elites made decisions, millions of ordinary people bore the cost.
