You had to live at this time to understand what Don McLean is singing about ! He’s singing about the day Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & The Big Bopper died in a plane crash … fans were devastated & numb. He also sang about the Vietnam war time,  The King Elvis, The Jester Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Rolling Stones,  Janis Joplin ;  JFK & RFK assassinations, civil rights & MLK as well as his assassination, 🇨🇺 Cuban missile crisis.  It was all about what was happening in our lives back then. Everyone knew all the words, when we heard Don’s voice we knew what was coming 😊  people would be singing in their car, walking down the street, at parties, esp around a campfire 🔥 some would be crying, others happy to be alive & singing their heads off!
We knew what Neil Young was singing when ‘OHIO’ came on the radio, the political crisis with  Soviet Union ( Russia 🇷🇺) & 🇨🇺 & America 🇺🇸 , we knew the National Guards murdered innocent college students (OHIO), it all came together in one wonderful song.
Next listen to Don McLean’s ‘Vincent’
Thanks Mr.G & I loved watching the reactors trying to figure out what  American Pie was all about 💟☮️.  Cheers from 🇨🇦

“The day the music died” refers to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly (Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper).

This song is a flat out history lesson.

The loss of our innocence  as a country. Nicely summed up with a mini history lesson.

When asked what the song meant Don McLean once answered, “It means I never have to work again.”

So glad i grew up in this generation of music.

"I met a girl who sang the blues" refers to Janice Joplin.

For those born and raised throughout the second half of the 20th century, even here in Australia, we knew what he was singing about because we were there. We lived it.

This is about the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly. My grand father was a backup singer with him. He listens to this song on the anniversary of Buddy's death

All the lyrics referred to events and people....exactly right. Despite its length, it was played on the radio a lot, and some of us know every word. 😊

I was 15 when this song hit the airwaves. It captivated me the very first time. To try and dissect this song in a comment section would take 2000 words. Every verse references moments in time; Buddy Holly, the Vietnam war and the way people felt, his interpretation of changing times, the yearning for high school years and the emotion he felt for a lost time. Listen again, over and over younger generation and investigate. Someday you may live this song as much as I did the first time I heard it.

The line gets me Everytime. In the streets, the children screamed, the lovers cried and the poets dreamed, but not a word was spoken.

So wild  watching reactions to this song. If you lived it, you knew. This is not coded, it was life. Love it!

Don was a young boy delivering news papers when he read about the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly .Richie Valens and Big Bopper .He then gives a sense of the history of those times .Saw him live  he got the whole audience to join in on this one.

For those of us who lived through that era, this song stirrs a lot of feelings. So much was happening, and we were young and rebellious. There is so many references in that song you younglings will need to Google it to understand it.
Good times.

I'm just about to turn 77 years and l lived through this time. I could recognize most of those mentioned, but not all.

In my mind, the song's about the loss of innocence that American society went through beginning with the late 50s.

Don McLean was once asked what this song is about.  His response was "It means that I never have to work again."  He doesn't talk about the lyrics because he wants the mystery to remain forever, that way it is always debated and never forgotten.  It clearly has references to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper.  The Jester refers to Bob Dylan and his motorcycle accident (The Jester on the sideline in a cast) and several others including the Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Byrds.   Don McLean will be immortal through this song.

It's about a reflection of what was happening in America during the 1960s with the assassinations of the Kennedys, Martin Luther King, Jr, and the Vietnam War. For McLean, it started with what he called the end of the happy 50s, the tragic plane crash of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson in February of 1959. The day the music died.

I’m 67 and grew up with this song. Never get tired of hearing it 20 times a day on the radio.  We had such good music back then.
