"And they're sharing a drink called loneliness but it's better than drinking alone...."

Tears my heart out every time.

“Hold up, his writing is this fire?”

Play this on the jukebox in a crowded bar full of drunks and you see the TRUE magic of Billy Joel. Especially here on Long Island.

As someone who traveled on business about 150 days a year for forty years, the line "they're sharing a drink they call loneliness but it's better than drinking alone" really hit me in the gut.

0:26 man said "i forgot how it goes" and unintentionally quoted the song 😭

No one could sit still. Everyone's head was bobbing. Billy Joel is one of the best musicians. And their reactions show it.

When you're younger, this is a melodic song about a bunch of people you might see in a bar.

As you get older, you come to realize that this is a song about lonely people, broken dreams and wasted potential.

Great song either way, but the older you get the harder it hits.

I love how it’s an human instinct to sway whenever piano man is playing

The thing is if this is the first time you’ve heard Billy Joel you haven’t really heard Billy Joel. The man has a huge range of musical styles.

The thing that always gets me about this song is his self awareness in the final verse.

“And the piano, it sounds like a carnival

And the microphone smells like a beer

And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar

And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"

He realizes that he wrote a happy sounding song about a bunch of lonely drunks, he himself included…

RobTV caught the best set of lyrics in a song full of excellent lyrics. "... while the businessmen slowly get stoned. Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinking alone." It's a song about how so many of us are living lives of unrequited dreams. We're all like John. There's someplace we'd rather be in life ... even the Piano Man himself.

I love that anecdote somebody on Tumblr told about going to a Billy Joel concert where he asked "Who's ready to hear some new stuff?" And after the crowd reacted he said, "too bad, same old sh*t!"

I mean, I feel the man earned that.

It's crazy how he made such a depressing song sound so cheerful.. in the end all he wrote about was people drowning their sorrows and regrets.. yet everyone was smiling and waving with the melody.

What a great song.. and a great artist.

It never ceases to amaze me how many reactors sing along whilst nodding their heads with silly cheesy grins on their faces. The song is basically about loneliness and regret and running away from the depressing hum drum everyday existence. Absolutely no clue.

One of the best life experiences, being at a Billy Joel concert. He starts playing Piano Man , everyone is on their feet singing this song , he stopped singing just playing, we sing the whole song. Everyone laughing and hugging each other. Best way to end the show. Thanks Billy for all the music and memories.
