This is what happen to my friend, at age of 13 went back on holiday to Nigeria, and was told he was never going back to UK. He couldn’t adapt , went from bad to worst and with the help of his foster parents and his biological mother secretly got him a ticket back to Uk. He was of 16, arrive with nothing but  manage to do well in life.

Shout out to the foster parents for at least giving him a jump start. I can’t imagine being in their shoes with the shock of seeing this man, that when they last laid eyes on him was a boy whisked away never knowing if they would see him again.

This has brought back the memories of my childhood. I am a British born Nigerian. I had a similar experience like Peter. I was given to foster parents 6 weeks after birth until I was almost 10 years old. My parents were students too. Like him, I was tricked into going to spend a week of the long vacation with my biological parents and eventually ended up in Lagos, Nigeria. It was the trend with our parents' generation in the 60s and 70s. I wasn't as fortunate as Peter, I never got to see my foster parents again, although I was able to write letters to them while I was in school. Since I returned to live in the UK I have never been able to get in touch with my foster brother. Those days in the 70s through the early 80s were traumatic times indeed.

God, you can still hear the pain in his voice

Imagine raising a foster child for 8 years, then that child disappearing for years and then rocking up 10 years later without any warning and being expected to bring that child back in. Abusive doesn't even cover it. The entire thing those Nigeria parents did was a scandal and created so much trauma for the children and their foster families. The truth surrounding these hidden stories needs bringing out into the light.

If you are African, you will know how very common this is and also how very rare it is for children to speak out against their parents. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your story, hopefully it will break the silence that surrounds this form of trafficking.

I really enjoyed listening to Peter's story. A lot of his story resonated with me. To those that deal with parental abandonment/grief issues; please know that it is OK to call a thing a thing and tell the truth about your parents. Yes,  they may have "done the best that they could" AND they also royally screwed you over for whatever reason. Both things can be true. May we all be freed from the pains & heartbreak of our childhood traumas.❤

I’m an African and I could never leave my kids to be cared for by a stranger let alone in a whole different country this is insane I’m so glad he survived but he has a lot of trauma I hope he heals from that one day

This was deeply troubling to watch. I am an American Black woman born in 1975. My parents married young and had 4 children. They would have NEVER let other people take care of their children.  They were working class people. They worked diligently and efficiently and raised moral, college educated children.  I love them because they were selfless and sacrificed to see us grow into amazing adults. ❤

The story is gripping and validating for any African child that has been abandoned by their parents. The interviewer handled this with such decorum and grace. My parents shipped me off to a boarding school at the age of 5. I cried all the time I'm told. Long story short, they sent me to another boarding school in secondary school and I started running away wanting to go home but they never came for me. I then attempted to take my own life by drinking a bit of washing powder, I guess I was just a child but still my dad refused to come and get me. Eventually the school said it wasn't safe for me to stay and my aunt came for me, stayed there a little while and Eventually another relative took me in. I feel nothing for my parents but I treat them with respect and i do help them out when I can. We'll never understand but also we will never heal fully, even well into our 50s. In the Caribbean, many people went to the UK to work as well but I’ve never ever heard of anyone sending off their kids to total strangers to be raised. Even if they left their kids back home, it would’ve been with a family member, especially the grandparents. It’s sickening what happened to this poor kid.

I always say that my only fear is not death, it's being needy and homeless. Every time I see a homeless person,it hits me and I always wonder what their story is.

My partner's mother from Sierra Leone gave her kids to foster families while she and her husband had fulltime jobs in the UK. I called it pimping her kids out.  I come from another culture and can never understand this type of mentality. They could've taken care of their kids even though they had jobs. All her kids who are grown up adults have trauma. Some of them were abused and hated and resented their parents for many years, especially their mother. They also kept the grand children away from her. It took me some years to understand the resentment my partner and his siblings had against their mother. Really heartbreaking.

Visited China recently. Same thing is happening with children born to factory workers. They only see their parents during Chinese new year. The rest of the year they are either at a boarding school, with grandparents or foster family. It’s really sad.
