"Fireflies are poisonous to frogs we cant have that!"
"Bring your frog to hell. Bring it to hell and make it eat magma."

In my survival world I just so happened to find a ruined portal on the edge of a swamp and then that portal also happened to spawn in a basalt biome and at some point I was chased back into the overworld by magma cubes only to be rescued by the frogs and get a ton of new froglights so yeah basically the only way for someone who doesn’t know about froglights to get them without looking at an external source is pure bs and random chance

There are quite a few items and blocks in minecraft that are impossible for a casual player to collect in large quantities without making a farm.
Which really blows for players that don't want to make farms and/or be afk for hours just to get some frog lights or resin.

My personal solution to this is change it so feeding the frog a glow berry would let it drop a frog light instead

I was so ready to go launch survival minecraft and try to figure out how to get frog lights without a guide, right up until you said how to get them and I'm thankful I didn't. Cause there is no way even in heaven that I'd think to put the two together in the same room.

Feed a frog magma cream…
Thats it

Thats all they had to do..
But no
It had to be a live magma cube

A few potential solutions:

.Make it so frogs can be directly fed the Magma Cream item to make froglights (No longer requires you to bring frogs to nether)

.Add an achievement for feeding a Magma Slime/Magma Cream to a frog (Makes it easier for players to find this mechanic)

.Add a new frog variant in the nether (Maybe based on a toad or bullfrog with horns) (So you aren't required to bring one from a swamp) (Akin to llamas and trader llamas, this new toad mob is a separate mob with a unique spawn egg but functions nearly identically to regular frogs).

.Frogs drop 1-4 Frog Lights when they eat a magma cube

.All frogs drop a basic froglight which has 16 dyed color variants (So you dont need specific types of frogs, plus extra colors are nice)

I don't even know how you get them I've never even seen how you're supposed to get them in game. This video was my introduction to how you're supposed to get them genuinely how the fuck would anyone figure that out???

I actually took charge and built a froglight farm in the SMP world my friends and I played on, it was a huge chore since we agreed early on that breaking onto the nether roof wasn't something we wanted to do on the server, so I had to fly out until I found a bastion with a spawner and then hollow it out, fully spawnproof it, build a powdered snow killing chamber, and then I spent all day searching for a swamp so I could even get the frogs... and this was before you could leash boats, so then traveling with them back to the home base was another giant pain

All because I thought froglights were pretty and I wanted us to use them for our builds instead of torch spam

It was worth it, but it was so much work

My alternative for the Froglights would be to introduce small, wisp-like mobs called Swampfires that would spawn in swamps at night and attack the players. They wouldn't have much health, but they're attacks would set the player on fire for a few seconds. Frogs would be able to eat them and make Froglights.

Kinda crazy how only now I realize that it's quite a hussle to get froglights. I am one of those few who go after them in every world I play because is such a pretty and smooth light block. And not going through the Nether roof because I play in Bedrock.
Sometimes for the farm I just flatten an area of Basalt Delta and add a little hut and punch the bigger magma cubes from a safe porch around it and then the frogs eat the small ones. Or use a design I found in Youtube that needs powder snow, allays and Bastions.
Honestly, for me, it never felt boring most of the process to make these farms. The only part that is a drag for me is to collect powder snow if I want a Bastion design.
But it really is alot of work and not intuitive one at that for different light blocks.
I would also consider myself some kinda of casual player, but sure enough I'll go through anything to get all the blocks and decorations I want.
But the way to get froglights now in game is not good game design

They could just code it like "Give the frog glowberries. It'll poop froglight. You can dye it after." It was that easy....

The saddest part is that Mojang is no stranger with adding stuff that is extremely convoluted to get and offers very little in exchange

The sniffer and echo shards being the clearest examples of this

all the effort and time to go craft all the necesary things you'll need, find a specifically warm ocean ruin, trying to do archeology while being attack by drowned, have luck to get a sniffer egg out of that and wait for It to not only hatch but also grow into an adult, for you to only be able to get 2 flowers out of it

Same with the shards, like, first of all you need to locate an ancient city, go into It and look around one of the most dangerous structures in the game without getting killed, add that if you want to survive there you need to know what you are doing and have a bunch prep, when you get one Its useless by itself so you need to go find 3 more, all of that for you to just be able to craft 1 thing with them and is one of the most poorly designed items in the game

I was wondering why everything looked so desaturated but yeah, matcha flavored explains it. Going to echo a common suggestion I've seen to make frogs eat slime to make non glowy versions of the existing froglight blocks which can then be crafted into froglights.

I remember I once planned to get some Froglights in my single player world. After an hour of travelling and looking for frogs, I found one. A single one, by itself. Can't breed that and I'm way too far from my base to lead it and drag it home, so I carried on the search.
Half an hour later, I just gave up. I didn't even get as far as taming a Nether biome and dealing with all the challenges that would provide, just crappy RNG was enough to make me change my mind.

And yet, my base was decorated with a couple of Beacons, mounted Ender Dragon heads, several automated farms for random items, and bespoke houses for all my named trade villagers. I had infinite emeralds thanks to rescued zombie villagers who would pay handsomely for melons and pumpkins, and full access to basically any enchantment I wanted. I had a full suite of named Netherite tools and armour, along with Silk Touch/Fortune III alternatives in a shulker box so I could swap them out as and when I wanted. I had a lava breeding room and several super smelter stacks. I had the Elytra, and several spares. My base could not be penetrated by the rarely spawning Raider Pillagers... because their pathfinding sucks, not because I had clever defences. An artificial fishing hole I could farm loot out of, elevators between levels, and a Nether highway floored with blue ice. Quartz and coal blocks to give my basement a nice chequered tile look.

But it was the FROGS that made me not bother. Every other thing listed had a nice build up, challenge, and reward to it, even if the reward was "Well it'd be neat if I had X set up here." But the frogs had me walking around for over an hour and a half, so well equipped that I wasn't in danger, just hoping to find a breeding pair. I didn't get far enough to start on the more engaging aspect which would've meant researching the Magma cubes to find their best spawn location, scouting for one near my highway or base, linking up to it, and then building stuff.
All for a different coloured light.

2:10  Let's think about how does one even discover what frogs eat in Minecraft 😭

I feel like an easy solution to making them more accessible is to making a "nether frog" (or some other kind of fantasy glowing frog) that can eat fireflies (or spawns around magma cubes). Removes the real world issue by just making it a fictional animal.

I think I collected a single frog light, one time, because my world HAPPENED to have a swamp and a basalt delta reasonably close to each respective portal end, I didn't even use the light.

0:19 wait that's how you're getting frogs to your bastions? I feel real silly now. Also froglights are a lot easier to get in multiplayer because only one person needs to set them up.

“Fireflies are poisonous to frogs, and we don’t want to encourage kids to feed fireflies to frogs. Instead we will encourage them to bring them to warm dry areas where literally no water can exist, which is much healthier for amphibians.” -Mojang, apparently
