The Hunger Games

Refusing to lose his grip on the districts, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) enforces a reign of absolute terror by ordering the public execution of anyone suspected of sympathizing with the rebellion. This cold-blooded display of power shows the true depth of his tyranny, as he murders his own citizens simply to send a message of fear to the Mockingjay.

At its core, the story of The Hunger Games is about the power of one person to change the world. Set in the future remnants of the USA in a new nation called Panem, one male and one female "tribute" between the ages of 11 and 18 from each of Panem's twelve districts is forced to participate in an annual competition called the Hunger Games, which is broadcast live throughout the country for the entertainment of the Capitol's wealthy residents.

Now, bestselling author Suzanne Collins and the world of The Hunger Games return in her latest addition to the series: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Forgot about the late 2000s-early 2010s movie trend of “woman softly sings ooooooooooo in the dramatic scenes”

The obvious, ironic, flaw in Snow's heart analogy being that the heart is, bar none, the most innately selfless and hardest working organ in the body. It bears the heaviest burden in the system, and cannot stop working even if it is sick or wounded by its own ceaseless operation. And what does the heart actually receive in return for it's endless labor? A quite meager portion of the actual blood it deals in--supplied by a tiny, fragile vessel that is well known for being easily clogged.

Donald Sutherland had a career spanning over sixty years with a number of roles in amazing films, and yet President Snow was his ultimate performance.

7:40 snow's family must have grown up privileged but I feel so sorry for them having this bloodthirsty paranoid mad man as a family member

Even his granddaughter was terrified of him and instantly undid her braid

Snow's description of Panem as an orderly paradise speaks volumes about how the Capitol viewed the war.

The execution of victors was just CRUEL AND VICIOUS

Those are people that had to deal with the horrors of the games and capitol for YEARS AND DECADES just as much as Haymitch and maybe for much longer years they were forced to mentor children who were going to have to fight for their lives and they had to witness children they mentored die up close and put up with the capitol and snow telling them to just put up with it and constantly put up with their boundaries being broken and being dragged into the capitol to witness up close failing again and again to save children they mentored themselves and spent two weeks with if anyone deserved to see a free panem with no hunger games it's them and they were simply killed off it's sickening me to no end

I actavily started making an au where the Victors survive because it was too sickening for me

The hunger games like many other dystopian stories like it does such a great job at again displaying just how unnatural and unsustainable dictatorships are. The ones in power might get away with it for a time, for years or even decades, but eventually the cracks become to rampant and people who have nothing left to lose say enough is enough. And that’s the one thing snow completely undermines and underestimates throughout the years. Hope is one thing when you pair it with people who have nothing but their lives and who few death as just an alternative path to freedom you come face to face with an unstoppable force.

You cannot be a fan of the franchise and not see that many of these things are now happening in real life. I can think of two countries committing these atrocities right at this very moment.

Snow: “Eh why not” When he’s thinking of killing a group of people

The thing that is most crazy is the clear technology disparity between districts. Most districts were soo poor they were effectively living like it was the 1800's, while the capitol had super advanced technology. It's almost a wonder how they could even invent things soo advanced with soo few people actually given access to higher levels of technology. But I guess it was more like a reversion state, where most of these technologies existed before it became a dystopia, and the capitol simply hoarded it. But that was also part of their downfall, because with as strong as the capitol was, its resources to do advanced things was limited because of limiting all the other districts to being raw resource farms, whether it was food or mining.

This scene and Star Wars definitely had a similarity. President Snow was Emperor Palpatine while the Peacekeepers were the Stormtroopers.

A show of force that was really a show of weakness and fear.

Does anybody else see the glaring resemblance between President Snow's speech, the social contract, and how most of us only live to work to support the rich? More and more, I see how our media was basically telling us what was happening and the inevitable conclusion of society as we know it. That's why they all build bunkers and buy islands, they know they are the cause of the coming devestation they just believe they can outrun and outspend it, but water shortages, natural disasters, and freedom don't care about wealth or status.
