Drake might be a touch surprised to learn that tonight, and for one night only, virtually the whole of England will be hoping for a Spanish victory.

'Not bloody likely' from Princess Anne is also top tier British. The context was a determined kidnapper telling her to get out the car and come with him after he had already shot and wounded 3 people to get to her.

Lord Raglan, after his injured arm was cut off without anaesthetic as a result of a wound at the Battle of Waterloo, said to one of the medical staff ‘Hi, bring that arm back. It’s got my wife’s ring on it!’

The very latest is “I don’t think so mate” uttered by a stasi police officer in Southampton

I think this one should heve been included. "I am just going outside and may be some time." Captain Oates. British Antarctic explorer, sacrificed his life in 1912 during Captain Scott's ill-fated expedition.

I remember watching the news during the Iraq war. They were interviewing a couple of Royal Marines, and the interviewer commented that Basra reminded him of Southampton. One of the soldiers scratched his chin and said in a rather thick East London accent: "Well... there's no beer, no 'ores, and they're trying to kill us." At which point, his mate interjected: "It's more like Portsmouth, yeah."

In the Korean War an American general radioed a British outpost under attack and asked what the situation was. The British officer said "Things are getting a bit sticky here Sir", the American general thought it was all OK whereas an English general would have known immediately things were really bad and sent reinforcements.
Understatement to someone who doesn't understand it can be dangerous.

After recalling a deadly friendly fire incident during the Falklands War when a Forward Observation Officer for the supporting artilery brought on devastating air bursts onto his own men, their former commander, Major Neale, said "Well, I took him off my Christmas Card list !". A more typical English reaction is hard to find!

A british soldier had his leg blown off. When his comrade said, oh God, you've lost your leg, he responded, no I haven't, it's over there.

I agree the British resolve to carry on during the Blitz is legendary. Their open defiance of Hitlers will expressed in witty remarks is a remarkable display of courage and steadfastedness.

Churchill's quotes are the best ones IMHO. I think it was Lady Astor, at late night party, said to our Winston, "Sir you are drunk !" To which Churchill replied, "madam you are ugly, and tomorrow I will be sober" ! Brilliant. Another one was where she said "If was married to you I would poison your drink" to which he replied "If was married to you lady, I would gladly drink it"

Here's another: "I was so angry I nearly said something". 😏

6:09 At Sandringham two middle aged American walkers, husband and wife, asked Her Majesty if she had met the Queen "No but he has" she said indicating her Body guard. They asked for a picture even if she wasn't the Queen after a talk. Would love to have seen their faces when they realised or someone told them 😂

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress."

Words spoken by Captain Eric Moody while flying a British Airways Boeing 747 at 37,000 feet. The plane had flown through a volcanic ash cloud causing all kinds of problems. They eventually got the engines started and landed safely in Jakarta.

Moody spoke about it on an episode of QI - Series U, episode "Underthings" if you want to know more.

The British are also very good at putting the pompous in their place.
Lord Nuffield was at a function in one of the Universities. He left his hat and coat with one of the college porters. At the end of the evening he went to get his belongings. Upon being handed his hat he looked at the porter and rather pompously asked:
And are you sure this is mine?
to which the porter replied:
I don't know, but it's the one you were wearing when you arrived.

The Queen used to go shopping and drive her car alone. She would wear a Barber wax jacket and head scarf. Most people failed to notice her. so a colour block was a good idea.

"Smoke me a kipper I'll be back for breakfast" should be on that list

A couple of years ago a drunk driver crashed into our local pub leaving a massive hole. When they reopened after having it fixed they put out a sign saying. Our drive through is now closed, sorry for any inconvenience 😂
