We’ve been waiting 6 years for this, and now it’s finally here: The successor of the reMarkable 2. So this is the reMarkable Paper Pure. And honestly, I find this thing really confusing. Because on paper, it sounds like a disappointingly conservative follow-up to the reMarkable 2. No frontlight, same old resolution, similar pen latency, an active pen instead of EMR, no proper folio but only a sleeve, and a chunkier plastic body — all at almost the same starting price as the reMarkable 2.

So yeah, not exactly the dream reMarkable 3 many people probably had in mind.
But here’s the weird part: the Paper Pure is not just bad news. The display, despite that underwhelming resolution, is actually much better than I expected. It’s bright, reflective, contrasty, and in the right lighting, it’s honestly one of the best-looking E-Ink displays on the market.

And that’s what makes this device so strange to review. Because compared to the Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move, the Paper Pure does bring back the simpler reMarkable idea. It’s lighter, more focused, black and white again, and in some ways closer to what made the reMarkable 2 so appealing in the first place.

But at the same time, it also feels like a weirdly worse replacement in a few important areas. So let’s find out if this simpler approach still pays off in today’s E-Ink tablet market.
