I remember walking around on the moon for an hour. I found a mission to find a lost mining employee or something. So I got a waypoint for a cave 2 miles away. I walked there. I found the cave, went inside and was prepared to fight a creature or some pirates or something.
Nope, the dude was just in there sitting there. Completely safe. He knew how to get out and how to get back to his base.
So cool bro, you guys don't have text or email or FaceTime on the moon? I didn't fight anyone, I didn't encounter a challenge, I didn't DO ANYTHING. And this was before they added that little car thing so I basically just had to sprint and the walk while my stamina recharged for 5 minutes. Absolutely fuckin incredible game play. That was my introduction to the games loop.
Was thinking about the sheer audacity of the nylon bags they sent out to people then saying there was a canvas shortage like it was the buyers problem.
We knew since Skyrim's re-releases that Bethesda depends on the players to fix their games. The only way they'd be punished is if they made a game not worth fixing.
I think people forget about that Todd interview where he didn't want Bethesda to be known as the studio that only puts out TES and FO games, and didn't want to just go back and forth other every release. But uh, yeah probably would have been better for him in the long run.
Todd’s accomplishments are buying the rights to fallout and elder scrolls. His 1 original project starfield flopped. He’s just good at buying properties 😂
It was always weird to me that they talked about how hard it was to make Starfield in their engine as if that was some sort of badge of honor. As a consumer, I don't give a shit how hard it was. They should have picked a better engine and then all that work could have been doing something useful rather than solving problems that shouldn't have existed in the first place.
The absolute VENOM that drips from each and every word Kuhlmann says tells you everything you need to know about what happened at Bethesda.
This man was probably the biggest Elder Scrolls fan at Bethesda itself, got his dream game (TES6) delayed by over a decade, promised the opportunity to lead its design and development if he stuck to his guns and powered through Starfield, all to be snubbed by the big Todd himself so some unnamed person could be the lead of TES6. Some unnamed person that I would bet actual money on being that talentless hack Pagliarulo who doesn't even fucking like elder scrolls and openly stated he prefers Fallout.
This industry is unfair. Kuhlmann deserved so much better for the literal decades he put into this company only to be rejected because he wasn't in the company's shitty high school clique.
I think what was all the more damaging is that Emil and Todd are allergic to design documents (Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 didn't have a game design document; ie, no plan). I think Starfield would have been decent had they just had a few star systems planned out for the main story, factions, and side quests. It plays like Todd didn't revisit the ME trilogy and Andromeda, and Fallout, to plan his dream game. I don't think the employee was lying about Starfield being the best they could do, considering they just had thoughts and prayers to as a basis. A lot of their strengths took a backseat and had to be cobbled together. I think this is the a similar problem Bioware had with Anthem and Andromeda (to a degree, Veilguard as well; all titles in development hell).
There was an interview the other year from another former dev (I think it was Nate Purkeypile) who also complained about how complicated it was to get stuff made. When Bethesda was just a small team, if you wanted an object made, you could just walk over to someone's desk, ask them for it, and they'd do it. But now Bethesda is structured like a corporate office, so first you have to find the manager of your department, convince them to talk to the manager of the other department, and if you're lucky your request gets approved. And while you're waiting on that, you're constantly being dragged into pointless office meetings that waste even more time. Todd and Emil sit at the top huffing their own farts, meanwhile the actual devs can't get anything done because they've been kneecapped by corporate protocol.
What’s crazy is looking at what no mans sky has done since its launch compared to starfield is such a joke. This huge studio and they put no heart into the game. Smh
What nailed Starfield's Coffin for me was definitively the 1000 procedurally generated planets and dungeons, if Starfield was more like The Expanse, where humanity doesn't have FTL travel and the setting is limited to our own Solar System, and they handcrafted 1000 locations instead, they could've pulled it off, or at least made something that feels like a Bethesda Game and not an AI iteration of one.
I just want to point out that Shirley Curry (aka Skyrim Grandma) was scanned for TES6 back in 2019 and I can't even imagine the level of disappointment she has with every Bethesda announcement that wasn't TES game. All of those teasers about new (at the time) UE5 terrain tech was total BS.
