FOLLOWING ANSEL ADAMS l A gentle approach to Yosemite Landscape Photography

Ewan Dunsmuir Images - Landscape Photography

Most people come to Yosemite to shoot the massive dramatic rock faces, but in this video, Im trying to follow the philosophies of Ansel Adams, to find the gentle silent interplay, where that soft light touches the landscape.

I focus on the more gentle aspect of YOSEMITE and where I meet Photography legend, William Neill.

FREEWELL GEAR - I used a mist filter for the videography here which is their V2 hybrid (CPL/ VND) which helps recreate a cinematic bloom akin to the larger more professional set ups.

I visited Yosemite about 2 months ago for the first time as a human and a photographer. I’ve taken a few of the same photos you have from those same angles so it definitely brings me back. I can honestly say, I’ve never been so moved with the beauty that Yosemite presents in every peak, vista, valley and nook. It inspired me to not just take a photo but make one. Your video brought me back to those exact same feelings that I hope I captured in my photos. No words can truly articulate the beauty and magnificence of this valley, but for those who’ve not only “seen” it, but “felt” it like you described is moving. Your video is so very well done. ❤

I think the other comments on this video Ewan have already said it all and more. It was a cracking watch and had me wondering why I’ve been so dismissive of such a location. The hordes of tourists has always put me off but you seem to have found some exquisitely quiet frames amongst the normal views. I was blown away by the last two images on day two. What belters that were and I could tell they truly inspired by the experience of being among such grandeur and not to mention standing shoulder to shoulder with a local legend. Made me want to dust off the Pentax again.

This just popped up and I’m in a bit of a rush today but I couldn’t resist a wee peek at the intro. That start was epic and all those pictures loaded to that music, wow. Getting the timing right on those must have been a real headbanger 😂. I’m going away tonight so I’m going to save this for a quiet moment on Friday morning over coffee.

An inspirational masterpiece Ewan. Your video captures a perpetual sense of the scale and beauty of the place. The stills feel as though they belong in Ansel’s gallery. Thank you 🙏

Absolutely awesome photos of Yosemite and another beautiful atmospheric video. I visited Yosemite 1995 but had a completely different view and approach of my photography during those times. It has changed totally and I can only echo your approach of finding the gentle light and not go looking for the million times shot highlights. Its so amazing the way you capture the light in your shots and so inspiring.

Hi Ewan. At the end of your video, you say thank you for watching. How can we not? Stunning video, stunning images. Thank you for creating this wonderful content for us.

Well Done!

Living close to Yosemite with frequent visits I am always interested in what others see. Following the light here is the best, your process (composition to post) is excellent.

Incredible. Thank you.

Stunning - Of course - Ansel would sometimes spend two weeks in the darkroom getting the right print - now its a touch of a few buttons!!!

Took me longer to watch than the 34mins, I kept having to pause the video to look at the images longer 😂. What a place and some new (to me) perspectives. Thanks for sharing your experience of Yosemite, it was inspirational.
