Flamborough Photowalk – Landscape Photography
This week I’m heading back to the stunning Yorkshire coast for an early morning Flamborough photowalk, with the aim of capturing some fine art landscape images around Flamborough Head.
The alarm went off early and I left home at 4am so I could arrive around an hour before sunrise. My main subject for the morning was the iconic Drinking Dinosaur, a fantastic sea stack that makes a great foreground subject with the North Sea and rising sun behind it.
Conditions were looking interesting when I arrived, with sea fret and mist sitting out over the water. This created a beautiful soft quality to the early morning light as the sun gradually started to burn through the mist. I was also lucky enough to get some lovely cloud formations directly in front of the sun, which helped create a soft, warm and atmospheric sunrise.
As always, I was looking to create more than just a record shot. Using long exposures, careful composition and filters, I wanted to capture the mood and atmosphere of the coastline and create some fine art landscape photography.
The second part of the video takes me to Flamborough North Landing, where I photographed the traditional fishing boats as foreground interest, with the dramatic cliffs and coastline of North Landing behind them. From there I followed the coastal path and made my way towards Queens Rock, another fantastic sea stack and a great subject for some long exposure coastal photography.
For this shoot I was using my Nikon Z9, along with the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 and 14-30mm wide-angle lens. I also had my sturdy tripod with me for the long exposures.
My filters included a 3-stop ND, 6-stop ND and 10-stop ND, together with a CPL polariser and my 1.5 (5-stop) graduated ND filter. These gave me plenty of flexibility to control the light, slow the shutter speed and balance the exposure between the sky and foreground.
Join me for another early morning on the Yorkshire coast as I explore Flamborough, photograph the Drinking Dinosaur, North Landing and Queens Rock, and try to create some atmospheric fine art long exposure landscape images.
If you enjoy landscape photography, long exposure photography and exploring the Yorkshire coastline, I hope you’ll enjoy coming along for the walk.
