watching karma hit Clark like his 30s car is quite satisfying

This story definitely takes very strong inspiration from Lovecraft's "Shadow Over Innsmouth." A man comes to a dilapidated town full of people whose features look like a mix of human and animal, run by an affluent family that are ostensibly responsible for the town's downfall. They have to escape the town after they discover its secret, only to find out that they have ancestral connections to the town. In this case, rat people replace the fish people of Innsmouth, but by and large the beats are very similar.

I like to think that if Lovecraft had ever decided to write a story with a “happy ending,” it would have been one in which the protagonist was a Native American.

While it’s true that Lovecraft held various racial prejudices toward different communities, a little-known fact is that he had great admiration for Native Americans. He was fascinated by the myths and legends of Native American culture, especially those that spoke of the cosmos or the ability to travel to other realities through dreams and rituals. In fact, it’s said that Lovecraft even wrote several letters and befriended members of Native American tribes, and some of these letters can be found at the Tomaquag Museum in Rhode Island.

I just think it’s an interesting fact that doesn’t get talked about very often.

Gotta agree that I don't think trying to "uno reverse" Lovecraft's racism really works, because you can't really use these tropes without indulging in them.  I think what Corben was trying to say, and it wasn't communicated that effectively, was that Peck, a white man, was the "contaminant" in the indigenous community, appropriating it and corrupting it for his personal gain while the rest of Lame Dog's residents live in squalor and are fed to the Rat God, and that Kito, Gharana and (eventually) Clark are that same indigenous community rising up to exorcise Peck's influence.  But we don't spend enough time in Clark's head to show him reconsidering his prejudices or bonding with Kito and Gharana and feeling internal conflict about that.  We don't know much about WHO Clark is apart from being your garden-variety Lovecraftian protagonist, so his character arc doesn't so much "fall flat" as it does "fail to get off the ground."  Plus, the distance traveled at the beginning and end kinda stretches plausibility: I get that if you wanna do Lovecraft references, having Arkham, MA as a location is kinda mandatory, but the Tlingit live all the way in Alaska!  That's QUITE a drive!

Perfect. I'm about to go to sleep.

39:44 holy fuck im deaf now

It reminds me to Lovecraft's story about the dude that is part ape, Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family. And of course, Shadow Over Innsmouth, but with rat-looking people instead of fish-looking people.

The guy had an anime ending, good for him.

🎼Im beginning to feel like a Rat God, Rat God🎵

56:14 Brother that's a lever action rifle, not a shotgun.

From the very first frame showing the driver, Clark, I thought he looked like Howard Phillips Lovecraft.  Now that they mentioned the town called Arkham, I know for sure it's a Lovecraftian story and I'm down for it
