Still can't get over the fact how they nerfed Starswirl's beard. He was supposed to have a magnificient long, white beard, not some gray, dirty cotton on his face...

Celestia saying Sunset Shimmer “abandoned her studies” then it shows Celestia terminating the mentorship will always irk me. Only good thing to come from that comic was the one liners from Twilights Canterlot friends.

I like to pretend that S9's Sombra isn't actually him but rather a clone that Discord set up so his attack would lead to the Manes learning to channel the elements without phisically having them, and his death scaring Cozy, Tirek and Chrysalis into submission

I'm sorry, you cannot convince me that Trixie was in the wrong in Boast Busters; Rare, AJ and RD acted like assholes from the very start

Trixe did many crimes but I love her

The Reflections Comic is my favourite; I really enjoyed its version of the characters (I've heard others say it was bland, but I liked it) and especially with Celestia & Starswirls relationship.

Instead of the version in the show where he felt incredibly cold at first and then oblivious afterwards. Starswirl was a mentor, but most importantly a friend. Comic Luna even mentioned how Starswirl was similar to Pinkie Pie, even though Celestia saw Twilight similar to him.
He's smart, intelligent and a magical genius BUT he's also a goofball. A good mentor; Someone who enjoyed fun and brought excitement in learning. And when things got dangerous, he would quickly try to put an end to it (Like when he noticed the mirror world affecting theirs. Granted, he was incredibly stern, but the situation was worse than he thought).

Might've just been me, but I thought he's way more interesting that way. More like Gandalf than... whatever the show got.

(Side note: I also like how Celestia was given more depth in the comic.)

Hot takes about Coco Pamel here.

But I gotta respect it, uwu cinnamon rolls are some the worst characters. It’s nice to see someone not infantilise a character and hold them to standards.

Even though I like Starlight and Trixie’s FRIENDSHIP, it always bothered me how they never made an episode with her interacting with other characters besides Starlight. It could still focus on one of the Mane Six and not on Trixie, but include her and build a lesson about friendship from that, just like what happened in the comics with Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack, and others.
An episode focused on Twilight and Trixie would be amazing, since they’ve never really liked each other, even if they tolerate one another. And if there were an episode that FINALLY resolved that issue between them, it would be really interesting to see as a form of character development for both of them.

Coco Pommel did work for her recognition by Rarity though
In “Rarity Takes Manehatten”, Rarity notices how efficient and impressive her work for Suri was and also notices that Suri is trying to downplay Coco’s skills instead of properly recognizing them because it benefits Suri to keep Coco thinking that she’s her only chance of making it. Then at the end of the episode Rarity gives her a job opportunity to work as a costume designer for a major Broadway production, which is framed as a favor but would also require a lot of hard work on Coco’s part, skills which she decides to utilize later for reviving a free community theater project, which is an extremely generous thing to do. Rarity and Applejack assist her with this but she takes the initiative to make it happen before they’re in the picture

I love the Pony comics. A group and I are going through the comics together and we’re doing a read a loud for all of them. Right now we’re doing Set Your Sail and the Discord Arc and it’s going well

I honestly would'nt consider any of theseretcons per say. It always felt like the comics especially the g4 ones were just telling their own versions of the same story. It was as if it was an alternate universe or something.

Interesting takes, I didn't really think on those until now, nice job!

Yeah the show used to have such minimal canon but man the crumbs were good. As for the recons, yeah it varies between interesting to just blehh

The unfortunate thing about MLP canon in regards to these stories is that the show is the main canon, and everything else is supplemental and soft canon at best.

But what I like most about the whole retcon issue is that the 10th anniversary of the original IDW comics pretty much state that the events of the comics did happen in the canon of the main show, but were written by Spike. When some readers call out the inconsistencies and contradictions, Spike says he wrote the stories as they were happening and occasionally had to fill in gaps when he didn't know all the details he did not know. His focus first and foremost was good stories, regardless of if they are inaccurate or incorrect.

So in a way, all of the comics ARE canon, but it's up to the individual to choose what they feel actually happened in the comics and what didn't. It allows for countless ways for people to write fan stories based on what they like and the tales they want to tell.

Was Trixie actually reformed in Manehattan but just put up an a-hole act because of Starlight's connection to Twilight? Has Charity been running Carousel Boutique in the background, became good friends with Yona, and sparked the latter's interest in fashion? Has Star Swirl always been the way he is in the show and was just embellished in the biased memories of his mentees? Heck, was Season 9 Sombra even the actual Sombra?

The choice is yours.

its not even just the ending sombra from the show and comics aren't even the same species.
sombra from the comics was a umbra pony that turned into a normal unicorn do to his reforming. the sombra from the show confirmed by celestia and a card about him been a unicorn he was a unicorn that learned dark magic he was never a umbra at all.
twilight found sombras diary in the comics meanwhile show twilight for all the seasons never learned of sombras past at all.

speaking of which twilight and sombras relationship annoys me.

back in season 3 when sombra first appeared twilight got a fear that showed. Celestia pushing twilight away because twilight failed with a banner behind twilight showing king sombra getting into the crystal empire and taking the crystal heart with twilight falling to his dark crystals below were a blue sparkle appeares over the dark crystals and were sombra is turning his eyes blue like the sparkles.
it literally predicted two events that happens in eg both midnight sparkle and something connected to twilight releasing mind controlling blue dark magic..so wtf did twilights season 3 fear mean?.

and the dumbest part the show and comics completely ignores twilights season 3 fear. It's never mentioned at all even though Celestia literally went through twilights memories and twilight herself literally saw the element of magic releasing blue dark magic that turned sunset into a mind controlling monster. and it's never mentioned in the comics were twilight literally learned of comics sombras past.

Charity gives me the imposter Lil Miss Rarity vibes.

Lots of fans argue Discord simply made a fake Sombra and made everypony forget about the reformed one. I'd argue Nightmare Rarity is even more inconsistent than this with trying to explain why Luna had a different look in the pilot than her current appearance, yet in Luna Eclipsed the towns ponies act like she hadn't shown up before (and the flashbacks show her with the post-season 1 look), then Trixie shows up as an ally despite the fact Magic Duel couldn't have happened yet.

Coco Pommel also has an unfortunate and dark connection with her name. They had to just call her "Ms. Pommel" because of it. If you know, you know. If you don't, then look it up if you're an adult or maybe late teen.

The discord stuff clearly happened After the last problem / twilights fall as the characters in the flashback are styled in a g5 way. Simple.

don't agree with everything in this video but sombra's comic stories were soo good. as a kid i actually hated sombra in the show, his episode was so forgettable and i spaced out every time i watched it. it's literally the same as an adult for some reason, the episode just doesn't stick in my brain and i hate rewatching it. but this video makes me want to reread his comics lol.
