My favorite scene in the movie isn't the part where Sammie is singing and then the nice set piece of the influence of black music, but the much smaller scene where Delta Slim is recounting that story about his friend who was murdered and then starts humming when the emotion gets too much. I feel like it is such a nuanced performance on art as a response to pain, and doubly so for black art.

The twins owning the juke joint was such a sad concept for me because it was going to fail no matter what. If the vampires didn't come, the KKK would've. If they managed to survive both those altercations, the Italian/Irish mafia were going to come and get them due to the money they used to open the joint and the wine/beer they were selling. Even if the Vampires, KKK, and the Mafia didn't bother them, the juke joint was going to go under in a couple of months anyways because there wasn't enough money coming in to sustain it. I feel for the twins man...

When Annie says “Put that cigarette out and you can hold her. I don’t want you getting that Smoke on her”, allowing Elijah to strip himself of the Smoke persona and finally be with his family 😮‍💨😭🤧

People hate Grace too much. Her child was threatened. I saw a comment from a video on Sinners that put it in an even better perspective for me, it was a comment from a Chinese woman that said how much Grace emotionally impacted her. How she grew up with the one child law where daughters were regularly thrown aside or aborted because they were seen as so much less than. She said to see a Chinese mother literally burn her entire world down just to protect her daughter was very emotionally impactful on her and I thought that was so beautiful.

In Grace's defense, if I had a husband that looked like Bo, I'd lose my damn mind trying to get him back too.

People who say Sinners is overhyped need to reevaluate their opinions.

I think there is also a subtle tragedy to Remmick. He is hinted at being a first contact victim of colonization, and seems to be driven by a desire for the community that was taken from him. Unfortunately for him, his community is long gone, and as he tries to force others to join him, he ends up using the same appropriative and blanketive tactics used on his people. I mean he is a monster in many ways, but there is a tragedy there. I think that is part of why the Fili are brought up in reference to the Griot. He may have been a Fili  and has lost his stories and songs over the centuries, or if he was not one, he craves the sound and power of what he once experienced, that has been loat for so long. It is likely why he had previously targeted the Choctaw when he first appeared, he was trying to gain the accompaniment of a Firekeeper, but failed to do so.

The saddest thing about this movie for me, is that they did so many things, went through so much, survived so much, worked so hard, even killed... And still their dream couldn't even last one night before it was destroyed.

I can’t lie Zane you’re wearing that preacher boy fit down

I know a lot of people hate Grace but understand not only does he threaten her child but when he speaks to her in Chinese it's a specific dialect from the area she and Bo are from. The actress helped Coogler with those lines. Now imagine how terrifying that had to me for her knowing at any point Bo could go home and easily get access to their kid.

something i really love about this movie as a white person is that it shows how easily certain types of people can go from oppressed TO oppressor within even a generation or two. Remmick is that concept exactly. my grandma’s grandma was the one to immigrate here from Ireland during the time they weren’t considered white & were oppressed in america. yet ive absolutely had to correct my grandma on racist and oppressive views many times. same with my grandpa who was a first generation from mexico. hell, his first language was spanish & he only doesn’t speak it now because he purposefully forgot it due to oppression he was facing. when bad bunny was performing, still, my mom had to call him out on his racist comments towards a man speaking spanish and showing pride in his culture. two different versions of that exact concept. my grandma benefits societally from being white & the irish accent being gone, my grandpa benefits from assimilating to the point of losing his culture, and BOTH turned around and turned that same oppression onto others once it was off of them.

Grace & Bo serve an especially interesting spot to me, showing how someone can both profit off of racism AND experience it, and perpetuate it (loosely in the story). they have the two stores, they aren’t a focus of the black specific racism of the time, they’re very soon about to get it a lot worse not too far from this time, AND i think it’s not a coincidence the character who can “float between” both white and black spaces is the one who brings the vampires in, specifically harming the black population. she had a power over them and she used it to get what she wanted, to help HER, even if it killed them all. it’s not hard to see how that can relay to other races can SPECIFICALLY use anti-black racism to prop themselves up higher on “the ladder”

from every race this movie has a very clear message, and it’s what i love about it. they’re all sympathetic, they’re almost all wrong for what they do in some way. it’s a gorgeous movie that speaks on the history AND current times of race without alienating any one of them truly while still keeping the focus on who’s been harmed the most & not pulling punches of that truth

As a Chinese person, I also got really mad at Grace. She should’ve have been more strategic, I wanted her to make a fking plan to stall the vampires and kill them all slowly and systematically as the sun rose, ending with him. That’s how we operate in the face of white colonists.

But what makes me really sad is the lack of compassion people have for the woman, non-white, woman of color, who received the most psychologically abusive manipulation from Remmick. At no point in the night is Remmick using any African languages on any of the other characters, he’s not taunting any of them with their ancestral language. He’s not standing next to anyone else’s husband and effectively cuckolding him and using extremely intimate details in Toisanese to make them feel exposed and vulnerable. And for a mother to see that happen to the father of her daughter, her reaction just makes sense.

Ryan Coogler made such excellent choices and the care given to her character really moved me. I felt as if the kind of abuse that we face as Chinese people in the Eurocentric world was reflected, and I felt seen in a way I’ve never felt before in any other English-language / Western film. That final shot of her burning with her husband just hits different.

Note: The only time Smoke smiles in the entire movie is as he dies holding his daughter (and he only barely smiles).

I mean, I would take a sequel specifically about the Choctaw vampire hunters

Everybody talking about MBJ winning the Oscar which I want too but I want Coogler to win best director BAD

Annie is one of my favorite characters, her voice, her skin that just glows through the whole movie, the way she plays her character 😫 ugh I love her, she’s so beautiful

My favorite part of this video is when you call Hogwood a big back and a tub of mayo. 😂

The one thing I never see people mention about Grace is the threat of sexual violence that Remmick also holds over her head (by not only revealing her and Bo’s sex life, but also indirectly threatening to rape her). And not only threatening to assault her, but also doing it in a very specific dialect of Mandarin that only her, her husband, and her daughter speak adds to the feeling of violation and fear. So all that plus threatening her young daughter who’s at home all alone waiting for her parents…valid crashout imo

Let's be honest, Annie knew the others would be cooked if she was a vampire because she was THAT knowledgeable icon.

People don’t believe me but I still say that when Smoke died and held his daughter in his arms, that was the first and only time in the ENTIRE movie that he smiled.
