I remember the 2000s were obsessed by summer too

I remember being introduced to this through teen beach movie and getting obsessed w the 60s after that

i remember not understanding why Mack wanted to go back to the real world when "Wet Side Story" felt like such a magical place where the only thing they cared about was tanning and surfing, and then i thought "hey maybe thats why so many boomers want things to go back to the way they were in the 60's" great video im so obsessed by this specific aesthetic!

Beach culture was also really prominent with teens in the early 2000s. I was in my early teens during those years and remember how everything had this "beach" vibe. For example, The OC and Laguna beach were both super popular shows on TV, that nearly every teen watched.  'Hollister' was an "it" brand that popularized the every day 'beach casual' look to teens. Puka shell necklaces were everywhere, and so many teens wore one. Light washed jeans, with layered cami tops underneath a light button up sweater was "the look". Many girls these had fake tans and chunky highlights to complete that 'sunkissed' style. Pacsun was also super popular back then, and had all the surf brands like Hurley, Billabong, Roxy, and Volcom. Many young guys and gals all across America, wore brands and logos that were originally popular within SoCal surf culture. The look also wasn't complete without a pair of flip flops or vans on your feet.

You look at a highschool or middle school yearbook photos from the early 2000s and most guys are wearing a Volcom or Billabong top, maybe a hollister polo, while a girl is most likey wearing some top featuring the Hollister seagull. It was on everyone and it was everywhere. I'd say the beach look all but dissolved by 2008, when 2010's hispter culture began to takeover and Urban Outfitters became the new main staple.

The ending where you try to place the decades after the 60s fixation on the beach was interesting to me, as i remember a couple years back in maybe 2021? 2022? There was an aesthetic called the “ coconut girl” that was flooding my feed. It drew upon 90s and early 2000s tropical nostalgia, specially in islands such as Hawaiian or the Caribbean. Looking back, that whole aesthetic was also probably a variation of the 60s obsession with the beach, being rooted in nostalgia in a directly post covid world where all we wanted to do was escape. Just a thought i had. As someone obsessed with the 60s who literally just got back from a socal beach, this video was perfect to watch😁

Outer Banks is another 2020s example of beach escapism, but it has the edgy aspect to it like Euphoria, so it’s not just pure fantasy like ‘60s beach escapism.

The surfing craze of the 50s also led to the development of skateboarding or sidewalk surfing as it was initially known.

If you’re going to talk about the beach and the 60’s you cannot leave out the Fort Lauderdale spring break scene. In 1960 Glendon Swarthout wrote a book titled “Where the Boys Are.” He was a college professor and writer and went on spring break with some of his students to sunny Florida in the late 50’s to write about what was going on down there on the sand. Instant big hit movie documenting college kids and their hijinks. It’s wasn’t just So Cal and Hawaii.

The beach is fun!  Surfing and surf music were in style and we met friends and socialized at the beach. Also, being in the moment and appreciating the sun, sand, and water was the thing to do in times prior to "screen time". 😎

I grew up in California and we had a pool growing up in the 90s/2000s. I remember that was always a reason to have a party. My mother was an excellent host and cook. She would go through magazines looking for new recipes or look through old clippings she cut out months ago for her next gathering. She would go to the party supply store to buy decorations for the “luau” she was throwing in the backyard. My dad actually rebuilt the patio to host guests and for him because he would barbecue. Family and friends would come and we would have such good times swimming and socializing.

Growing up as an 80s kid, the beach aesthetic was definitely part of our childhood as well.

Brands such as T&C, OP, Quiksilver, Red Sand, and my personal favorite, Gotcha were practically part of our everyday wardrobe.

On top of that, beach volleyball was shown regularly on TV, with the likes of Sinjin Smith, Karch Kiraly, etc.

Thank for saying "kind of" with everyone was welcome. I respect the historical honesty. I got into 60's beach culture from the late 90's / 2000's resurgence. MTV was playing beach themed music vids like Doin Time from Sublime, Walking on the Sun by Smashmouth, just wanna fly by Sugar ray. Timbaland had a surf hip hop beat with Luv 2 luv you.

I was living in the north getting winter depression and I remember really getting into surf stuff as a counter to the winter. It was therapy. Even changed my room to a beach theme and replaced my bed with a lawn chair. By the time 2003 or 4 comes around the 60's beach movies are on DVD in bargain bins I watched them all, I made a black surfer short in college inspired by those movies. Moved to be at Miami at the beach, Blue Crush"  came out, then moved to California where they had a legendary CD dvd store where you could buy cult surf movies you never heard of or have. It had its own small section.

Beach culture is a vibe, it represents a freedom mindset, fun, water is healing, eye candy and escapism.  It's not always nice people until you meet the beach person local who is a free spirit and tells cool spots and about his life.  Anyways thx for making this! :)
