The Second World War became the biggest event of the 1940s. It influenced virtually all aspects of life. From food, gasoline, and even fashion. The 1940s is remembered as a pretty uneventful era in fashion, but I don't think we should see it that way. The 1930s glamourous movie star look made way for sharp and bold power dressing. This was the decade of victory rolls, femme fatales, and lipstick as morale. From government regulations like L-85 to DIY beauty hacks and ā€œmake do and mendā€ culture, fashion in the 1940s was less about excess and more about ingenuity. And somehow, even with restrictions, it still managed to look confident, polished, and undeniably iconic. I dive into how wartime restrictions, Hollywood influence, and women in factories influenced idealized 1940s fashion.
