Long awaited second part of the ART SUPPLIES I REGRET BUYING video is finally hereeee! I summed up everything I regret of the past couple of years of testing materials for you 🤩 watercolor, gouache, ink, stationery, everything is here!
What was your biggest art supplies regret recently? Tell me in the comments!

Back in the mid 1980s I purchased my first Pentel Color Brush and it was AMAZING.  I was doing dry brush art like a regular Andrew Loomis and Robert Fawcett without having to struggle even a tiny bit.  But sadly the NYC art supply stores stopped carrying the Pentel Color Brush soon after I discovered them.  I went everywhere looking, I went to Utrecht, Pearl Paint, all the places near Lower Manhattan, Union Square, Times Square and Coliseum Books but all to no avail.  I had to wait for YEARS until they came back in stock (late 1990s).  I first learned about glass pens also way back in the mid 1980s from reading books on how the Masters did their drawings.  I can tell you that even in the first decade of THIS century I never saw them being sold anywhere.  Glass pens were like Bigfoot, Chupacabra and the grey aliens, because I never saw them available for myself.

This lucky dude swims in an embarrassment of art riches and doesn't know it!

My greatest art supply regrets all involve NOT buying something when it was available only never to find them again. I have one tool that I bought from a now defunct "manga" online store and now it's sold nowhere else.  it's a metal pen\brush holder with a plastic attachment that allows it to run along a French Curve\Plastic template without any issues.  I call it a 'displacement tool' for lack of a better term.  Back in 2020 I would buy a whole box of newsprint for sketching from a local U-Haul for a low $8. Today the cost is now TRIPLE!

I completely agree about the Hahnemühle cotton sketchbook! I remember buying it because it was one of the only option available for me for watercolor back then, just like you, but now I only swear by my beloved Etchr! Huuuuge difference!

I found pentel white pen is like gouche   watery

13:16 I'm not sure what's available in Germany, but the brand LeFranc & Bourgeois, made in France, makes a line called Flashe Matte vinyl emulsion, essentially an acrylic. But you can get it in tubes but I like the jars and it's much less thick than regular tube gouache. Their regular type comes in glass jars (besides the tubes)  but they now have a new 97% bio-based line of 16 colors available only in jars that are plastic. No tubes  are available in the bio-based. You can also buy small plastic containers with snap lids that should securely hold a smaller amount of paint. That may be worth a try.

I was also a little bit disappointed with the white gelly roll pens, but I find that the moonlight set has some nice coloured gel pens! I definitely recommend the uni ball signo white gen pens as well as their silver and gold gel pens too, I love using them for details! I also love the black tombow fudenosuke brush pen for fine lining! Interesting video, I like hearing different opinions/experiences that artists have on art supplies!

Thanks for sharing, always good to hear your reviews - very informative 🎉🎉🎉

The brushes are wash brushes so they're made to just put large washes of water or color on your page. I have a size 12 especially for that so it's not used to actually paint with. I usually paint in A5 or smaller so I normally use a round pointed brush that's a size 2 or 4. :)

I really love the Hahnemühle paper for exactly the reasons you describe - they're not amazing but they're solid. I don't have this fear of "ruining" it with my art :D So I really just use it for experimentation and ideas - then I'll use Arches or Saunders Waterford to do full pieces in.

I've never liked Schmincke because I love very vibrant colors and they don't fit my art style. They're great quality but I think you have to know if you want muted colors.

So, in terms of regret? Acrylics and oil. Coming from a watercolor/ink background, it was just a struggle to fall in love. I grew up doing acrylic and oil so it's not that I'm not familiar. But I don't love it. The process just wasn't satisfying to me - especially oil paints - because you need so many things to get started. Palette, cleaning cloths, palette knives, turpentine, linseed oil, all the brushes. With watercolors I just need the paints, paper, a brush, and some water. It's "cleaner". It's the same thing for me with oil pastels - it just makes a mess :( I think it's a tactile/haptic thing.

I love the DaVinci Cosmo Top brushes for finer watercolor work.   They have changes the handles to have a slight triangle shape which makes it so much easier to use.

I’m not an expert on art supplies but I love your editing 🤩 1:20

Liquitex acrylic gouache has been my biggest recent art supply fail. It’s not opaque enough, and once it dries it’s permanent and can’t be reconstituted. I don’t remember why I thought that I needed it.

I love to make (sew) pencilrolls a bit like the Sendak from peg and Owls. So on the hunt for some good heavy waxed canvas I just spend for the second time my money to a brand that i really cant work with. This time n a other webshop….

My biggest regret was the Schmincke retro tubes set. I realized I wasn’t really or needing wanting to use those ‘toxic’ pigments aka cadmium and cobalt. I think I will sell them as well.

This is why I make full research of each art supply I plan to buy 😂
Have I made mistakes? Of course. I bought white nights oil pastels. They crumble and brake so easily, maybe they were sold old.
I live Talens gouache, but I understand that it does not suit where you planned to use it… they are also damn expensive nowadays
Thanks for informative video😊

nooooo not the karin markers 😭😭 but they're so juicy!! you can blend into others or with water because of how juicy they are. I always felt like the tombow were a bit too dry to be honest

Just discovered your channel. I could tell you were being honest, you were speaking from the heart, and I really appreciate your opinions.
My biggest art supply mistake is watercolor pencils. If I want watercolor, I'll use watercolor, which is always better than wc pencils. And if I want to use colored pencils, etc.
And also, since I love to buy high end art supplies but I don't want to spend a lot of money. So, whenever I see good art supplies at a tag sale, I buy them. Which is why I have about 10 different watercolor travel sets, and I almost never use them. I also have about 200 pens of all types. Hoarder.

Thanks for your input. I also found those sketchbook ribbons to change paper texture bc the sketchbooks are sealed so tightly for sale. I remove them immediately. I haven't tried many gouache brands. I have the Caran Dash pan set and it suits my needs.  I have had mid luck with brushes. They're either to soft or to hard. Looking for a Goldilocks brand.

hannemuller is expensive here in Brasil some people who paint pet use a lot the expression line .  I 'm in the begginer but I hate gelly roller white , actually I didn't find any white gelly pen that works well

Urgh, I wish I had seen this video when it first came out - I just bought the size 12 Casaneo round and it is insanely large for me.

Gelly rolls.I stick to a size 10.There not to bad. BUT I saw a tip the other day.If you buy an acrylic pen that you can remove to bottom of and put some kneadable eraser in the pressure forces out the paint to the tip creatinga  better flow. (Does not work on a gelly roll as you cant get the bottom stopper out.) I have not tried this yet as I feel I should use up what I have first but I will be trying it with my next white acrylic pen.
