The pan pastels are supposed to be used with their 'soft tools' only not a blending stump, and most just use them as an under painting for regular pastels to be put over the top for details. They are really designed to save your regular pastels for use over large areas, so i can completely understand why you wouldn't like them.

I watch videos like this when I feel like I'm missing out on all the "popular" art supplies. Helps me understand not everything that glitters is gold... Thank You sharing and being honest. Some people take not liking a certain art supply very personal, especially if lots of Artubers hype them up. My wallet is grateful for my financial discipline! 😅

I love art material regrets videos, it's so interesting to see what other don't like and why. I fell in love with PanPastels, but I only use them with the sofft tools and on really smooth paper. They make a great misty background. I don't like working with regular soft pastels though, too messy. The Kuretake set was a big regret, but I've grown to like it as well. I found a way to use it that works for me. I found a way to incorporate most of my regrets in my art practice, although it did take a long time for some of them 😅

The Kuretake Gansai Tambi was really a surprise 😅 i love their consistency but I understand your point! You can try to sell the materials you don't use on Vinted or trade with art friends (maybe with your sister) 😊 Have a great weekend Kat ❤

Our town has a shop that buys and sells partly used art supplies.  It's awesome for destashing and picking up new supplies to try on the cheap.  Apparently, this kind of shop is popping up all over the place.  There might be one near you.

I hate art supplies that smudge too! I can't stand the feel of using them or the mess they make on my hands. I have seen several beautiful pieces made by other artist, using them. It's just not my thing.

Pastels are a tough one….. I also am not fond of the messy finger feel ( and I use the tools, make up spines, eyeshadow brushes, cotton balls etc) but I use mine quite a bit and yes I have collected them all. But pastels , for me, took some getting used to. The Gansai Tambe I also love and have all the sets. What I really enjoy is how so many artists use so many different supplies to create their work! I love these videos. It gives people a new perspective on how artists use supplies. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Having said that, I am going to force myself to dabble in some charcoal.😂 I have to try it right?😂❤

I'm very confused by so much in this video - you say repeatedly you hate getting your hands dirty. Then why on Earth would you even BUY charcoal sticks or regular pastels in the first place? And you speak of the Holbein pigment paste in a way that makes it seem like it doesn't work - when you neglected to do your research to understand what it takes to turn straight pigment into paint before you purchased and tried to use it. Pan Pastels are expensive because of the cost that goes into making them and the high pigment loads. You even used them incorrectly in the video and say that are not worth the money? Your opening line of your description for this video says "What are supplies do you think aren't worth the money?" It does NOT say, "What art supplies have you tried that don't work for you?" It really irritates me when people make videos like this, with the explicit purpose of saying they are not worth it - to the point it's written in your video description - but when people point out the issues with that, you hide behind "I just meant it doesn't work for me". I find this so upsetting because as a new artist, I was easily turned off of higher cost artists by people like you who said they're not worth the money, but in actuality, you either had an inherent bias against the products - like getting your hands dirty - or not having a clue, or bothering to take the time to learn how to use them properly. I would have missed out on some of my favorite mediums if I listened to things like what's in this video and I would encourage any new artists watching this and taking it to heart to look at other videos and reviews of any products in this video if they interest you. This entire thing is just a massive disservice to the art community on YouTube.

Pastels and pan pastels really come in handy with polymer clay art!

Being influenced by other artist's cool supplies can always lead to regrets. I try not to be an art horder and get only what I consistently use. That's a big travel art bag. I try to pack a really light small bag with just essentials to sketch (mechanical pencil, 02 Micron, 3 intense pencils, water brush and small pad). I finish the art when I get home or back to the hotel with my other supplies. I do understand it not having the depth you need though.

This is a perfect video to illustrate the importance of understanding the media you are interested in before you buy.  Otherwise, your experience with it might not be the best it could be.

In my experience, my biggest regret is that as soon as I get rid of something, believing I'll never use it in my whole life, ever, that that is when I wish I had kept it after-all.  Just because you don't like it in 2025 doesn't mean you won't want it in 2030.  If "regrets" can't be returned, I find it best to place them out-of-the-way, rather than get rid of them.😊

Pan pastels really only give good results if you use them on PastelMat paper and use the Sofft tools they are sold with. You owe to yourself to try them with those before giving up on them. They are ideal if you don’t like to get your hands dirty. They are wonderful for covering vast areas with color in a short time, and they layer on top of each other wonderfully. And it only takes a small amount to get great coverage. I love blocking out a portrait with them and then using colored pencils on top for details. A real time saver, and they give a beautiful depth to animal portraits.

The holbein pigment paste has to be mulled into the gum arabic with a muller on a glass slab that has been sand blasted or etched with some sand paper or such. Making good watercolor paint with a wet pigment and gum arabic takes a bit more time and experience. I'm dying to try the holbein pigment paste since I make handmade watercolors, so hey if you ever plan on getting rid of your pigment paste stash I'll be happy to take them off your hands:) lol. I was curious about pan pastels so I bought a small set which came with ‘sofft tools’.  The sofft tools (in a pinch make up sponges and applicators should work), are necessary.  I’m not a soft pastel artist but I use them so touch up my watercolors.  I use a Delfonics bag to store art supplies.  It can be used as a handbag but you need to buy a strap for that.  I only use it to hold art supplies so I haven’t bought a strap.  The Delfonics bag has pockets on the outside and it’s not padded so it can hold a lot. It’s smaller than A4 but for my needs it’s roomy.
