I'm glad this didn't make the final cut. I preferred their friendship, the way they could talk so easily and the way they genuinely admired each other. Never saw their chemistry as romantic.
The chemistry that was never acted on was what made it so good. There was obviously something there, but her being a dedicated wife and Jimmy becoming a better man was perfect.
I'm glad this wasn't included. It would have muddied the waters and gone against everything else Geena Davis' character has said and done. She wasn't really committed to baseball. It was fun, but what she really wanted was her husband back from the war and kids. That was her goal. Someone like that wouldn't even entertain an extramarital relationship. There was zero build up for that, and it wouldn't have made sense for the character. Having the 2 of them come to a friendship and level of trust was enough. But the rest of the film establishes that she loves her husband and she's paranoid about him dying in the War. If she's so afraid of that happening, why would she screw around?
I did want them together when I was an inexperienced teenager. Now I liked the unspoken chemistry with maybe an edge. I agree this was unnecessary. We should like Jimmy by the end and I think it’s really beautiful how much he learns to respect the players as equals. Had this been kept we’d not only hate him for messing with Dottie but the team too.
I can see the interest in trying it. Sometimes the best way to prove it’s not right is to let it play out, then cut it. Exactly what deleted scenes are. An experiment.
I've read the original script... the editing of this movie is GENIUS... and you can see by this clip why that is so. The final edit is a rare time when it makes the theatrical release of movie the best version it ever would have been.
Thank God they took this out .....this would of ruined the entire movie....it changes both characters too much ....the movie wouldn't of been the same, it would of been more of a tabu love story than a story about baseball....
