Glad this was taken out of - Marla switching teams just seems wrong. When she got married she said, “I’ll be back next season!” She never said she was gonna play for another team. Plus she loved the Peaches.
I had just assumed that Dottie was crying because she was thinking about her husband, and him possibly not coming back. I know that because Penny knew what really happened in between, it made her upset, but in the context of the movie that we saw, it actually made complete sense to me. Also glad they took this out. Marla belonged on the Rockford Peaches.
It was wise to cut this from the film. It opened up too many issues too late in the story that wouldn't have been resolved. Everyone's attitude toward Dottie got flipped, and there wouldn't have been enough time to resolve them for the rest of the story to work. Removing it doesn't leave a hole in the narrative, either, because after the news of Betty's husband, Dottie would naturally have her fears and concerns magnified. Obviously, she was thinking, what if it were me? And only alone in her room could she let that pent-up anxiety free.
I agree with removing the affair/romance subplot. It would’ve made the movie just another Hollywood schmaltz job. By removing it, it allowed the film to focus on something much more earnest and relatable — the tension between the two sisters, which pretty much everybody can identify with in one way or another.
I’m glad they took this out. It was uncomfortable to a degree that it just made Dotty unlikeable. Plus Marla had a happy ending, why take that away from her? The movie works fine without the scene.
So glad they left this out - I've seen the movie countless times and leaving this in would have completely altered the tone of the story; makes more sense w/out it.
This scene negates the movie's premise that women are as tough and practical as men at baseball. There's the implied affair with the coach distracting a player from the game, pregnancy, high emotions, intense and complex relationship drama and seething jealousies.
Wow, that was, I don't know what to say, When Beverly and Dottie were talking to Marla, Marla just looked beautiful, her hair all nice, and drops the pregnancy on them and right away they go into protection mode and then Dottie forgets where she even is and the slide and everybody jumps on her ass. Glad they cut it out though, even though we all would be glad to see Marla as a new momma, Dottie was deeply concerned about the baby and waited for the call. When Dottie was crying in her room we all thought in the final cut it had to do with her thinking she was going to lose her husband in the war, which was what they wanted us to think but they was the from this scene and about Marla and the baby.
This scene would further explain why Dottie was so eager to leave the team when her husband came home while she was crying, as she would be ashamed of her actions with Jimmy and with hurting Marla in the game. In the actual movie, I always felt her leaving so abruptly during the championship series, even with her husband coming home wouldnt be something she would ever do. And then for her surprise return in the final game just seemed off too. With that said, I am glad they kept the deleted scene out.
Also I don't believe Marla was traded,. Marla met her husband when the team was on the road in Racine (where he was from) so she left the Peaches when she got married and they lived in Racine. She was probably just a free agent at that point and she said they needed some extra money.
