In this video I will tell you the tale of of Earl the Magmar, who is single-handedly the reason transfer moves from older generations of Pokemon got deleted for competition.

Sejun Park in 2013 brought this Magmar to the world championship, where he got 5th. This Magmar had to come from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, a game released 8 years before this tournament, and the only place to get a Magmar with the move Follow Me.

It was optimal for his team to get this Magmar, and he hacked it. It had illegal IVs that no one could EVER have on this Magmar.

I'll leave a pinned comment here cuz I made two big errors in the vid & couldn't change them in the edit.

1. It's not 1 in 14 billion, it's 1 in 4.2 billion. I misspoke. The math about the years is still correct!
2. Sejuns magmar was 12 Atk, not 0. I had two sources for his team, the Pokecheck one, & the team paste. The team paste says 0, so it slipped my mind in the scripting process. I noticed in the edit, and it's why in the "stat differences" I don't mention its attack stat even though 0 to 13 would've changed the foul play calc.

I'd wager even the people running the VGC events themselves wouldn't have caught this Magmar given how fuck-off obscure it is. I can't really blame them for eventually just setting a hard cut-off point for transfer moves.

I would like to add Eruption Heatran to the reason Gamefreak stopped allowing Transfer moves, it was only available from an Event in Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs

I am not really interested in competitive pokemon and only clicked on this because I love these obscure, strange video game mechanical deep dives and I've got to say, this is, by far, the most overly complex and variable sensitive things I've ever heard about a video game, I have to give huge props to the people who figured all of these interlocking systems out, truly the top of the nerdy mountain lol

I like the series, but every time I watch a video about competitive formats I'm reminded just how little competitive formats respect players' time. Rather than a match based on team building strategy and prediction, forcing competitors to grind and source rare stuff for a competitive advantage is emphasized. Requiring players to waste more time than Madden Ultimate Team players is impressively bad.

The competition would be way more respectable if you could just generate any legally obtainable pokemon. I won't hold my breath on that ever happening. Banning transfers rather than addressing the problem speaks volumes to the disconnect.
