Before the NASCAR Euro Series, Britain had its own attempt at American-style stock car racing.
ASCAR debuted in 2001 with V8-powered stock cars, high-speed oval racing at Rockingham Motor Speedway, and ambitions of bringing NASCAR-style racing to Europe. Over the following years, the series attracted drivers including Jason Plato, Nicolas Minassian, Ben Collins, Colin McRae and John Cleland, while evolving into the Days of Thunder Racing Series and eventually SCSA.
For a brief period, ASCAR looked like it could establish American stock car racing in Britain. But financial problems, declining grids, repeated rebrandings and its dependence on Rockingham ultimately brought the experiment to an end. It was eventually rebranded as the Days of Thunder Series but even that did nothing to save it. Stock car racing had a long way to go on the other side of the Atlantic.
This is the story of ASCAR, Britain's forgotten NASCAR-inspired racing series, and how it rose and fell years before NASCAR established an official European championship.
