Hello friends! I'm finally back with another video! I was meant to have this up last Friday but it's been a bit of a whirlwind last week or so for me. I had a major flare up last week that left me unable to leave bed for two days, then yesterday it hit me again and I ended up down the hospital, not really ideal when I'm trying to plan ahead for October haha! If uploads are a little less then you know why! BUT today I thought it would be intresting to talk about some red flags in horror movies, I've seen a few creators do similar videos so wanted to do my own! Let me know what your biggest red flags are in horror films and also check out the other creators videos below! Thanks for hanging out today!

dude nah ur so right on that first trope. i hate it when nobody believes them when literally logically they should. completely pulls me out of immersion.

edit: a movie that does this concept right is john carpenters “someone’s watching me”

Peter does believe Annie, he’s just scared sh*tless the entire time because a literal demon is stalking him after his sister got decapitated.

Great video, good points. Bad CGI with too much lighting is something I really hate.

Marketing is nearly always handled by a different team than the people actually making the movie, which is why that happens so often. Even if they're under the same company, they might choose to "spoil" something if they think it will make their marketing campaign more successful. But yeah, it's annoying.

I think final destination is also a good example of a recycled formula that's done right

The only upside of the insane woman trope is how satisfying it is watching the ppl who could have been saved if they just believed the girl get killed

I'm reminded of the marketing for Terminator 2.
Because the studio heads were so proud of the tech, they blew several big reveals in the marketing.

Months before the movie's release, we knew that there was going to be two Terminators, Arnold was going to be the hero and the villain was going to be made of liquid metal.

What should have been very shocking, was met with people going "okaaaay".

Even though it was one of the most successful movies of all time, it was almost torpedoed by its marketing.

Spoilers in marketing is such a difficult thing to manage. Like, I love going into movies not knowing things about them, but I know people who will not watch something if they don't know whats going to happen.

You may have missed the point why the “insane woman” trope even exists. Women are treated this way by society and these films often critique this.

4:15 not gonna lie, the technology aspect is what got me interested in the movie. I was afraid the movie would just be about the protagonist getting tortured for an hour and a half by a psycho boyfriend from what I saw in the teaser trailer. I probably would have skipped it if I didn't know where the film was going to go.

1:57 the husband and some did show empathy, they participated in the seance, even though they didn’t believe it. The mom then was possessed. Lmao they’d have been better off not participating and chalking it up to craziness 😂

Glad to see someone else with good taste saying Scream 4 is an essential 😎

3:20 not a movie, but there’s a psychological horror game called SpecOps The Line that’s about the horrors of warfare, but it was marketed as a completely generic shooter, so much so that it tanked the game. Marketing can be done right on horror projects.

My least favorite things about horror movies are:

1. Over reliance on Jump scares.
2. Too much CGI
3. Self aware characters that mock the horror tropes for the sake of being edgy.

I watched Antlers(2021) in theaters and the whole movie is about this kid with a monster in his house. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was that you never saw the monster, he is stuck behind a door the entire time and even when the kid defeats the monster at the end of the movie, everything is so dark that you cant even make out a figure throughout the fight. If I go to a monster movie, I want to see the monster man.

Barbarian was such a experience!
Especially the first 30 mins when that " it" scene goes down
I went in blind with Barbarian. No trailer , nothing.
And boy was it a fun watch

@ChronicF 2 weeks ago

I usually call the “insane woman” one the “husband in a horror movie” phenomenon because it’s usually the husband/boyfriend that doesn’t believe the wife

The "marketing showing too much" is my biggest hatred for ALL movies the past 10-15 years, and horror movies are the worst, showing all the scares & especially showing all the deaths.

It's why I try just avoiding all trailers for all movies, but sometimes that's not possible (especially going to the theater).

My biggest "ick" is when a horror movie tries to take itself seriously when it clearly does not have the budget to back that up. You need either a big budget or a REALLY smart director and writer for a serious low budget horror movie to actually work.
A great example of this is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) which only had 140K. Yet the great directing and intelligent writing made it be really good anyways.

YES ON COMPANION ! 3:47 I had randomly came across the movie on Amazon prime and I noticed the eyes on the icon, but I didn’t put two and two together… And I had not seen the trailer so the twist of her being a robot was so cool. I try not to watch trailers for movies prior. I watch the movies and then I watch the trailer and I’m always like thank God I didn’t watch the trailer cause they always spoil it!
