Honestly really big fan of Enigma being the one who Sonic and Co have been chasing. I had originally written Enigma off as a possible candidate due to her not really THAT evil, but the idea of her being mind controlled would really make a lot of sense considering it's (probably) Starline we're dealing with. It would also explain how the Chaos Emeralds were stolen under everyone's noses.

There is no way it isn't Infinite and Starline as a duo.
Starline knows Eggmans tech and Infinite knows his illusions. Both also know the crew well enough.
And now with Chaotix Casefiles we know both villains are interested in powerful gems and devices.
Infinite also "fought" knuckles in the Forces comics.
I doubt Infinite would be the new main guy since nobody in the main crew knew what he looks like behind the mask.

Would be crazier if they came across the Scepter of Darkness but that one is much more of a stretch.

This feels like a Phantom Ruby. I've always had a theory that there are other Phantom Rubys with a number of them being responsible for some of the haunted areas like Pumpkin Hill. It would be kind of cool to see my little crack theory being confirmed.

Ever since the first proper appearance of this mystery villain, I've gotten an eldritch horror vibe from them. If it is Starline, I think it would be awesome if he did die, but was resurrected and has essentially become a servant for some sort of Eldritch God, and is almost like a cult leader without a cult. Idk, I might be way off, and I'm bad at explaining. But it sounds cool to me.

As soon as Sonic said 'it's you?' when he managed to get the Asteron off of the villain's face, yeah. It's for sure going to be Starline. Might also be Infinite since he's in the Casefiles. He got broken/injured badly after getting bodied at the end of his coup attempt, and spent time using EggTech to put himself back together. Likely with Clutch as a black market seller/contact.

If scrapnik island is involved I would hope that the fate of the scrapniks isn’t that they are destroyed. It would be more interesting to see sigma and Mecha sonic and Mecha knuckles being mind controlled servants of this mystery villain. Maybe they get new appearances too, imagine if that scrapnik trio was covered in cloaks and bandages and repainted in edgy black and green color palettes. And had upgraded weaponry. Would be cool.

I imagine with all these spoopy vibes that the reason the mystery is being dragged out so far is to give us a grand reveal for Hallows Eve 🎃

You know, Starline had his gauntlet that could hypnotize people, he used it to keep Surge and Kit under control, maybe he refined it so it could disrupt short term memory and even work with a touch.  It would make sense if the masked figure IS enigma that he's using mind control on her, because she was more one of those "noble thief" types and not a world conquering villain.  I wouldn't be surprised if Mimic was involved too, since Starline has recruited him before and this time he'd be using mind control to make sure he didn't betray him.

Personally, i hope Starline is forming his own organization, his own Sonic Legion of Evil/Doom. Eggman will always be the big bad but he doesn't work well with others, and while most of Sonic's rouges gallery are giant monsters or eggman machines, not all of them are. Infinite and that new thief Enigma could be new allies for his cause.

Now yes, Starline also had a terrible track record of alliances. But given how his relationship/idolization of Eggman is likely fully burned to the ground i doubt he'll be trying to emulate Eggman as much anymore. Plus, it's possible he took a bit more out of the advice Zavok gave him. "True warriors will do everything robots can do and more."
