Learn how to run an overload power play in hockey, including player positioning, puck movement, cycling, net-front presence and how to create scoring opportunities against a penalty-kill box.

In this video, we break down the overload power play system step by step, starting with how to regain possession and then showing how all five players work together once the power play is set up.

In this video:
Overload power play positioning and player responsibilities
Using F1, F2 and F3 to regain and maintain possession
How defencemen can pinch while forwards provide coverage
Half-wall puck movement and creating passing lanes
Using give-and-go plays to attack the penalty kill
Cycling down low to force defenders out of position
Creating 2-on-1 opportunities within the offensive zone
Reading and attacking a collapsing penalty-kill box
Using the point and moving the puck from strong side to weak side
Maintaining puck support as players rotate
Creating screens, point shots and rebound opportunities
Recovering loose pucks and resetting the power play

The goal of the overload is not simply to pass the puck around the offensive zone. We want to use purposeful puck movement and player movement to manipulate the penalty kill, force defenders to make decisions and create open space for high-quality scoring chances.

A key principle throughout the system is maintaining puck support. As the puck carrier moves, the other players adjust their positioning so there is always another passing option available.
