In this video, we look at two intermediate defensive zone faceoff plays designed to help turn a defensive-zone faceoff win into a controlled breakout and offensive opportunity.
These plays build on the basic defensive-zone faceoff setup covered in our part one video (see: Defensive Zone Faceoffs: Positioning, Resp...).
Instead of simply getting the puck out of the zone, we're looking at ways to recognize how the opposing team is positioned, attack available space, and create offense off the faceoff.
Strong-Side Breakout – We look at how to attack the strong side when the opposing team is anticipating a traditional weak-side breakout, while giving the puck carrier multiple passing and skating options.
Quick Counterattack – A more aggressive defensive-zone faceoff play designed to create an immediate odd-man rush, potentially springing the centre for a breakaway or 2-on-1.
These are higher-level options, so players should first understand their basic defensive-zone faceoff responsibilities and breakout assignments before adding them.
In this video:
• Defensive zone faceoff strategy
• Strong-side breakout options
• Creating offense after winning a faceoff
• Using support to exit the defensive zone
• Reading the opposing team's faceoff setup
• Creating breakaways and 2-on-1 opportunities
• When to use more aggressive faceoff plays
