How do you break out of your defensive zone when the other team is forechecking aggressively?

In this video, we walk through four different breakout options and, more importantly, how players can read the pressure and recognize which option is available.

The key is that a breakout isn't just the responsibility of the player with the puck. All four players without the puck need to actively provide support, stay engaged until we have clear possession, and create options for the puck carrier.

We focus on three principles:

Support – All four players without the puck need to provide passing options and create our L-support formations.

Don't leave the zone too early – Particularly for the centre, staying low and supporting the defence is critical when we're under pressure.

Movement, numbers and misdirection – Instead of trying to force the puck through the forecheck, we want to move the forecheck, create numbers and attack the open ice.

Four breakout options covered:

• Weak-Side Breakout – Take the puck behind the net, make the forecheck chase and attack the opposite side of the ice.

• Strong-Side Breakout – Recognize when the forecheck has taken away the weak side and use the boards and supporting winger to exit on the puck side.

• D-to-D Breakout – Use your defensive partner as another option when the forecheck overloads one side of the ice.

• Reverse Breakout – Draw the forecheck in one direction, then quickly reverse the puck and use their momentum against them to attack the open side.

We also cover shoulder checks, communication between the goalie and defence, keeping the centre low as a third defensive option, supporting the puck with L formations, and recognizing where F1, F2 and F3 are applying pressure.

The objective isn't to memorize one breakout. It's to read the forecheck, support the puck and take what the other team gives you.
