"You just have to find someone to be brave for", is what Captain Yao told Grace about being brave enough to go on a suicide mission. And in the end, Grace found that person, Rocky. Love this film so much, they really did the book justice, and I recommend anyone whos seen the film to read/listen to the book. You'll find out more behind the scenes and get more context for certain things, plus you'll learn MUCH MORE about Rocky, his planet and species.

The answer to your aging question is, when you are flying close to the speed of light, time works differently. While Grace traveled those 12 light years to Tau Ceti, only 4 years passed for him while all 12 passed for Earth. Then the time spent figuring out the problem and the time for the probes to fly back the 12 light years to Earth happened too. Grace may have aged 10 years while 25 passed on Earth.

47:27 So the reason why Rocky did all this stuff was that Rocky was trying to figure out some stuff about humans. What kind of air do we breathe, how do we “see” and such.

If you notice the wall Grace is looking at between him and Rocky is made of multiple different materials. Rocky, who uses echolocation, can see through all of them, but Grace could only see through the transparent one. This was Rocky’s way of figuring out how humans see.

If you also notice, after the bridge is reconnected there is air for Grace to breathe with, and the entire wall is transparent. This was Rocky’s way of making things suitable for Grace.

1:20:47 When Grace was taking samples, some of the collector trays were facing the planet and some were facing the sun, and he marked which were which.

At 1:19:05 you can see that he separated the samples into containers marked as TC (Tau Ceti) --> ADRIAN and ADRIAN --> TC, showing which direction each batch was traveling.

Argon is a noble gas - meaning it does not react with any chemicals. At all. It's its own thing and it doesn't care about any other atoms/molecules, which makes it a perfect gas to put in a room with a "thing" that's eating the sun and you don't want that thing to die. Because if it does, you know for sure it wasn't the gas - because the gas can't affect the bacteria because it doesn't affect anything

14:56 Argon gas is whats known as an inert gas. It's a noble gas over on the far right end of the periodic table of elements. Since its outermost layer of electrons are full it doesn't must bond with anything which means it doesn't react with stuff.

So what we do is flood areas with the stuff to keep any unexpected things from happening with unknown stuff like the astrophage.

Why it's dangerous to us humans is well... We just don't run on it so we suffocate trying to breath it.

So excited!

It seems a few reactors miss this, but that wasn't 13 years at the beginning Grace calculated. It was 113.8 years for him to get back to Earth with the low fuel he currently had.

Heck yeah❤🎉

Just jumping back to your point about why they couldn't gather the fuel directly from the Petrova Line - sure, Grace managed to scrape up maybe a single gram of astrophage for research. But the Hail Mary needs 2,000,000 kilograms of the stuff to fly! The astrophage are spread so thin that if he tried to vacuum up a full tank directly from space, he’d be out there scooping for thousands of years. Earth would be a giant ice cube long before he even hit 1%.

Cheers Sprinkle 🎉

This was a lovely unexpected movie.😌

This is now my new favorite movie ever and I love to watch other people reacting to it, this is my new Outer Wilds lol reliving the experience by proxy

Thanks for the reaction! Good job catching all the info rapidly thrown at you, this movie makes you think a lot but it rewards you with an amazing story if you follow along :D

Wow, you're the first reactor I've seen that got that the astrophage were made of water before they spelled it out.

I watched this on screening time this movie out on IMAX, one of greatest experience, worth for astronomies enthusiast beside Interstellar!

So happy you enjoyed this movie ^^

1:55:52 It 100% is messed up, but it's also
100% understandable. The situation the people of Earth are in is literally a desperate and time-sensitive one. They can't risk waiting for other applicants to be mission ready. Grace is the only candidate who fits the job description to save the planet. In a way, for a situation like this, the people are forcing him to be brave enough to save Earth in exchange for his own life.
Ultimately, there is no right/wrong answer to this situation. You gotta do what you gotta do and hope for the best. That's the definition of the term "Hail Mary"

Note: Sorry if you saw this comment already. I just found out I posted this on a completely different video of yours! 😅😅😅

The film was originally a book. The author was the same man who wrote "The Martian", and a lot of the things present in the book qualify as "hard science" (grounded in established or extrapolated science, the details of which are central to the plot). Things got lost in the shuffle between mediums.

Really, I could fill an essay paper on a number of scenes and concepts from the book that never made it to the screen. The transfer from page to screen means that a lot of the "hard science" aspects are removed, making a lot of the decisions in this film seem bone-headed without the context. For example, not explained how the astrophage stores so much energy, or how it is "enriched" to serve as fuel. Then there's why Rocky decided give Grace surplus fuel; the film doesn't go into detail about the atmosphere of Rocky's planet. Erid is hotter and larger with a denser atmosphere, so it would have more time than Earth to suffer any effects from the astrophage - plus, Relativity is an alien concept to the Eridians.

Stratt is far less standoffish in the film than the book, however, and gets along with Grace far better. So, she's more likeable, and her decision to essentially force Grace on the mission comes across as more of a reluctant last-ditch effort. Well, it was in the book, too, but the explanation is different; some people have a genetic marker that indicates they're more likely to survive being in a coma for a long time—not guaranteed, just more likely. And this was required to fly on the Hail Mary. The odds of finding anyone with that genetic marker are stated in the book to be 1 in 7000, and Grace has that marker, and this is why he's forced on the mission in the book; even discounting the time it would take to train a replacement, there are very few people who could have replaced Grace.

Now, because Grace and Stratt's relationship in the film is better, Grace presumably never added amnesia-inducing drugs into the coma regimen since Grace didn't threaten to outright sabotage the mission; presumably, Grace's amnesia in the film was a genuinely unforeseen side-effect. By contrast, Stratt in the book puts down Grace for being terminally a risk-averse coward, with no apologies for what she's going to have done.

Best movie of the year(maybe several years)
I'm really happy you enjoyed it too
