By choosing not to reveal that Wild Bill, the handyman who spent time with your family, worked on your property and shared meals while sitting next to your daughter, John Coffey spared the parents the pain of knowing they had unknowingly welcomed a monster into their lives.  This act of compassion prevented them from suffering additional pain that would have only added to their existing grief.

The guy, Toot, is an inmate.  A life sentence, but he has a good behavioral record.  He is made a trustee.  Still an inmate, but in a position of trust.  The prison houses hundreds of inmates. Death row is one wing of the prison.

When John says im sorry for what i am instead of what he had done gets me everytime...

One of the saddest movies ever! Michael Clarke Duncan gives a fantastic performance as John Coffey! RIP LEGEND 😭🕊

How can you watch this & not shed a single tear ?? 😮

john coffey like jesus christ only not spelt the same

How John found the girls was by accident.   This was during depression times,  when so many people were out of work and traveling around the country searching for food, work, and just a place to feel safe.  He probably end up there the same way, Wild Bill did.  Looking for work

Arlen Bitterbuck got in there bc he killed someone in a Bar Fight over a Pair of shoes and Del ended up in there for trying to bury evidence from a fire that killed some people !

Me and my Grandma would read the installments (they didn't come out all at once) Stephen King is a master of character development. He almost gave up wrighting when nothing was selling. His wife fished Carrie half done crumpled up in the trash. She demanded he finish it. Launched him to be the best selling US author of all time.

the guy who they practiced on is a prisoner for life, they use for the practice

i wouldnt wish a UTC on my enemy, it was literally peeing acid when it started to flush out, burned my skin

John was taking the pain away from they guy getting the electric chair so he wouldn't feel the pain himself. He knew Percy would do that. 😢😢😢😢😢

Toot-Toot is a prisoner trustee. He is allowed certain privilleges. He is not on death row.

Execution witnesses included:  lawyers, both defending and prosecution.  families of the victims.  Families of the executed.  Court personnel, coroner.  In some cases prison warden.  John Coffey- J.C.

Mice live 2-3 years. So at the end of the film, 64 years later, Mr. Jingles has lived aout 25 lifetimes.  Paul asks the question, "How much longer do I have?"  If Paul suffers the same fate as Mr. Jingles, (with the average life expectancy of men being 76.5), he could be stuck here for another 1800+ years. That would truly be a hard punishment to bear.

It's hard to imagine a time when antibiotics were not available. Paul didn't want to take "sulfa tablets," an infection treatment with limited effectiveness. Penicillin was not widely available until after WWII, as all of available stocks were directed to the war wounded.

Almost no one ever seems to get this.
They had no evidence that would count for anything in court, no one would have taken them seriously enough to allow them a chance to demonstrate John's abilities. And remember, this was the Depression-era South; and John was a Black man, a HUGE Black man, found with the victims in his arms. To most minds of that place and time, like lawyer Hammersmith, the case was conclusive. There was no way they were ever going to clear him legally. Paul and his guards might perhaps have contrived an escape, but John does not do either strategy or stealth. It would be a matter of days, if not hours, before he was recaptured.

The guards would have been willing to give up their jobs and their freedom to save John, but there was literally NOTHING they could do.

1930s is during the Great Depression Louisiana. UTI was not easily treatable at the time. Penicillin was not available until after WW2.
Also, indoor bathrooms/WC  were only available in office buildings and institutions such as prisons or unless you were wealthy. Most people, especially in the South and rural areas only had an outdoor WC.
In the book, Hammersmith was a bigoted news reporter. However, the character in the book and the film were not concerned with Coffey's innocence.
John Coffey is portrayed as the embodiment of Jeasus Christ. Coffey's body scars represent the Stigmata. The flying matter represents sickness, death, and darkness/ evil.

I don’t know if anybody peeped that the lawyer is not Atticus Finch

Let's say they were able to convince the governor to give him a pardon or the courts to vacate or retrial, and the public to accept that, by showing everyone what ye could do. Then they'd all want him to heal everyone, and we saw how much just doing it a few times takes it out of him. Even if just sensing all the hate of the world as he does was bearable, bearing the effort to heal the world is not. I can see what he meant when he said Paul was doing him a kindness.
