The ending in the book is different. McVries, Garraty and Stebbins were the last 3. Then McVries just stops and sits down and getting killed. Then Garraty wanted to give up and let Stebbins win, but just as he touches him to say farewell, Stebbins drops dead before getting shot. Garraty resumes to walk, because he imagins that somebody still lives and taunts him to go along. But he couldn't get, who it was.
