It's not exactly a college. Ejae entered it at like ELEVEN. She sacrificed her literal childhood for her dream...only to be told she was too old. At TWENTY THREE. So she became a songwriter, and director Maggie Kang begged to hear HER sing the song, and this is the result. From the depths of tragedy to number one on everything for weeks, months, the literal most popular song in the world. Absolutely amazing story.

Something that Ejae said in a recent interview- golden was written as an unrealistic song to sing live to showcase the movie characters as beyond realistic/ as superheroes. The point was one would need to be superhuman to sing this live as part of a full concert. A real human would blow out their vocals doing this night after night live.

ejae was recovering from bronchitis and covid... but it's still two octaves.. so wherever it is... it's ducking awesome

@xxacidmv 10 months ago

The part that I find interesting is how EJAE was recovering from bronchitis and still gave this great performance

That's a very lucid view, "you may not like the genre but they are top quality professionals and have mastered many talents beyond singing really well" it's what I'm saying all the time as a fellow rocker too since I've had a look at k-pop, there are people out there only looking for bad things to say or mock and throw them hate, full grow adults, even other famous musicians, acting like kids probably very jealous of their talents too but I always thought it very unfair to them because the thing is high quality and authentic. It deserves recognition and respect.

I've said this in other comment sections. You can see the joy in their faces when they knew they landed all the hards part at the end and now its time to just let it ride.

You are the first vlogger who mentioned how well rehearsed they were. They practised for about a week 8 hours each day. Kpop trainees train for up to 16 hours per day/ 6 days per week. Hard work is part of the Korean culture.

EJAE

At 11, Kim Eun-jae (later known as EJAE) became a trainee at SM Entertainment, a prestigious and demanding South Korean multinational entertainment company. She sacrificed her teenage years and trained relentlessly for over a decade.

At 23, Kim was told by SM Entertainment that she was too tall (5’ 8.5”) and her voice was too dark, not feminine enough to debut as a K-pop idol or a solo artist. Her dream to be a singer was crushed.

At 33, EJAE’s song “Golden” was number 1 on BILLBOARD HOT 100™️ for 8 weeks and achieved double platinum status. On November 7, 2025, EJAE was nominated for the “Song of the Year” award at the 68th Annual GRAMMY®️ Awards (along with three other nominations).

Karma!

Thanks for your review. I agree with your assessment of Ejae. Humble. I would suggest everyone watch the Vanity Fair video on the making of Golden. It shows her incredible writing skills and an amazing human. She had 2x platinum song and she is in tears over how Golden helped her and others. She’s different ❤🎉

When in your analysis video you talked about how all the real-life singers perfectly match the characters, it reminded me of all the talk I've heard about how Rei Ami, who plays Zoey, the shortest member who does the rapping, is pretty much Zoey in real life form based on how she is when not performing

In fact the comparisons got so wild that when Rei was at someone's Halloween Gala, she actually dressed in costume as her character and the world collectively said that she just basically brought her character to life

I am almost 60 and have been a wannabe rockstar for most of my life.

After this Tonight Show performance, this song & this specific performance has engraved itself into my brain. And then I learned EJAE’s back story. This song was basically 17 years in the making.

This is a testament to her talent & force of will. Incredible & captivating stuff and I have yet to see the movie.

@VictorHernandezVH1 10 months ago

I agree with you 100% that EJAE is special. Her humility seems to be very sincere.
EJAE was accepted into SM Entertainment's K-Pop Idol Training system when she was 11 years old. After almost 12 years she was released being told she was too old to debut and her voice was too dark.
She got a music degree and practiced producing her own tracks.
She got back into the K-Pop game as a successful songwriter.
Besides co-writing many of the songs from the movie, she sang many of the demos.
The producers couldn't find a vocalist who could bring what EJAE could. The rest is history.
The KPDH Soundtrack has been certified Platinum.
GOLDEN has reached Double Platinum status and has hit #1 in over 25 countries.

Dude, when you start learning EJAE's story and seeing their interviews, it is hard not to fanboy/girl. I've never done that before either.

@maxbotten9410 10 months ago

Completely agree they sound better at this range. Would love to hear Ejae singing jazz - imagine she would do an incredible rendition of 'My Funny Valentine'

@Kckitty04 10 months ago

I swear between listening to random youtubers on the lore base stuff of this movie, learning it all to be able to enjoy it more then hearing Ejae talk about how she was rejected in her world along with the other girls and how they all ended up together and how this beautiful song is making her world come true a long long well deserved that's been clearly proven to the world that this lady can freaking sing and NEEDS HER GOLDEN. There was soo soo much more to this entire thing that actually makes this another masterpiece!! ( like Epic The Musical that you missed out on </3 )
