You Need To Calm Down by Taylor Swift is Misunderstood!

You Need To Calm Down is one of the songs in Taylor Swift's discography most frequently listed as a 'skip'. I'm here to tell you why YNTCD is worth a second chance, and its important references to queer history that go overlooked by most.

This is the 4th song performed on the Eras Tour, and part of my series where I'm breaking down the whole Eras Tour song-by-song from a gaylor / performance artlor perspective. If this interests you, check out some of my other videos!

THANK YOU!!! I'VE been yelling this info from the ROOFTOPS- No one seems to know the origen of Patient O

@luabeth7520 8 days ago

welp, sorry about the patient 0 thing lol. i do think she does this on purpose though, like evoking things, making people research stuff and then making it into a heteronormative thing, proving-a-pointlor about how easily queer history is brushed aside, like oh lavender haze is just a quote from mad men about being in love, closets dont have to mean closeting, etc. it's insane actually how many intertextual references to queer history she's made for so long, but they never get noticed by genpop, or if they do, 'it's not that deep' or it's performative allyship, or it's to string gaylors along to make money off us (lol we are not many, why would she need our money). and even the 'louder' things like the explicitly crediting Elisabeth Taylor estate and George Martin never really has them looking into these things.

So good! Thank you for putting this all together ❤ curious if you have traced the yellow wall paper theme to Charlotte Perkins ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’? So much to unpack there: patriarchy, forced domesticity as a prison, a woman descending into madness because she cannot author her own reality 😬 Taylor so smart. We loves.

I know you didn't name everyone, but I also have to shout out that Adam Lambert is the one giving Ellen the Cruel Summer tattoo. He was so instrumental in me learning to be an ally so young and remain curious toward exploring queer media, in spite of my religious upbringing. And probably a huge factor in why it took me so long to realize I was gay myself. 😅

Such a good video! My daughter is 5 & she is obsessed with this song/video because she loves Taylor Swift & drag queens (naturally haha). Whenever she is getting worked up & frustrated I tell her, “You need to calm down Taylor Swift.” 🤣 Works like a charm to snap her out of it 🥰 She is a certified Gaylor🫶🏼✨
