The most obvious answer for "Why did Clover try to eat the Statue of Liberty" is....Clover is a baby. Babies spend the first few years of their life putting anything they can in their mouths to figure out if it's food.

Clover starts with the Statue of Liberty, finds out it doesn't taste good, and throws it away (as seen in the movie). Then Clover finds out that humans actually taste much better and decides to eat them instead.

"This isn't death of the author, it's all of the authors fucking killing each other." I'm dying.

EDIT: Thank you for getting 10k likes for some reason :)

Cloverfield: A franchise built on so much mystery that even the creators don’t know what’s going on.

The idea that, for a few weeks or days, people thought there was gonna be a big budget horror movie where motherfucking Voltron rips up NYC and tears off the statue of liberty's head for some reason is just... beautiful.

to be completely fair a Voltron movie from the perspective of people on the ground watching Voltron fight a giant monster would have been fucking sick

I worked on Cloverfield as a background extra. It actually led to me getting with my SO because they damaged her car during filming(It's a whole other story). The amount of NDA and secrecy was heavier than anything I had worked on. Most of the crowd shots in the early movie was filmed at Paramount studios and we were given very vague instructions on reacting to certain things but we had no idea what we were actually reacting to. Entire buildings in the outdoor city setting on the Paramount lot were covered in green screen. It was kind of impressive. They were using the Cloverfield name for the project, but we were told it was just a placeholder name, which is not uncommon with productions that are trying to avoid attention when filming on location outside of a studio.

watching this movie in the middle of the day in manhattan was the weirdest experience. i went into the theater and saw everything destroyed and tons of loss and death and then i stepped out into a beautiful sunny manhattan afternoon. i felt like a time traveler or something, shit was wild

"We need something to put in our drinks?"
"Sugar?"
"NO GET THE OIL RIGS!"

The "It's still alive" message in the credits shouldn't have been sequel bait, just a small, final mystery to keep fans thinking about the movie for years to come.

Some director: Oh boy, I can't wait to release my new film that isn't at all linked to Cloverfield!
J.J. Abrams: But what if it was and wasn't at the same time?

Fun fact about Apollo 18. They did in fact record multiple endings, one of which a astronaut survives and returns back to earth along with the footage. But why they didn't use it is beyond me.

"The ARG... is not canon."
"IT IS CANON TO ME!"

I could survive basically ANY american movie by not moving to NYC

Every monster movie always ends up with an attack against a big city. Just once I'd like to see a very confused kaiju rampaging through an empty field of corn

“It’s dead.”
“It’s still alive.”
Schrödinger’s Kaiju…

I think it be neat if the "Seabed's Nectar" was like the yolk or food of Clover's egg. Would make sense why it woke up after the drilling rig broke into it.

" until JJ opened his mouth" I feel like perfect summarizes any multi film project he's worked on

You can see how Cloverfield directly or indirectly influenced 2014 Godzilla, such as the Muto's design and how a lot of scenes are filmed on human level

"If you stare into the abyss of the Mystery Box does it stare back?" No. That would imply that J.J. actually put something in the box.

There is a British film from 1961, called "Gorgo," that involves effectively a baby kaiju being found and moved to London.  The baby kaiju, at first assumed to be a full grown monster, is put on display a la King Kong.  Then the mother shows up looking for junior.
