A year from now, you will look back at these videos and get a good laugh. And will wonder why you had so much trouble. You've got over the hard part. you're trying something new. That's more than most people have the guts to do. Don't give up. You will  get there.

I got my first vintage watch a few days ago and tools are arriving daily.  I am so recently familiar with all of the emotions you go through in this video, it makes me smile knowing that I am not the only person who would try to cook a mainspring because I am excited :)

Your channel with its innocent freshness is a delight. Sometimes, as with the mainspring heating, you announce a course of action, and I am thinking “that’s not going to work, and it doesn’t.  But it’s part of the excitement to see what happens.

Been doing this 8 years now! Good luck in the hobby. It’s superb but lots of high and lows . The rabbit hole is deep and the tools expensive and typically there is a tool for everything !

Ahhhhhhh the joys of the one/non jewel pin pallet watches. I did some early learning on BFG866s and it’s so much tougher than jewelled movements. Took me almost an hour to align the pivots first time, then 30 mins, then 15 mins.

Loving your thought process. You’re going great. Beware of that desk height. Good you dropped your chair at the end. Protect your neck!

About 20 years ago I started out just like you, though there was much less content available on YT ... but still enough. I was limited to early 1900s RR pocket watches. Restored dozens ... from non-running with broken balance pivots to broken jewels. Was able to source the vintage parts and get them running, most to railroad time accurate (30 sec. per week). Carried one as my daily driver at work (residential remodeling). Still have a dozen +-. Not able to keep at it any longer due to loss of fine motor control, but loved the hobby and now can enjoy your journey. Congrats to your success. Side note - my favorite channel here and one the most helpful *(for me at least) was/is bunnspecial. Crusty earthy dude, but fantastic entertainment. Always made me chuckle. Give him a look, early-mid 2000s posts. A non-pro who gave me e confidence to try. Currently following Nekkid Watchmaker, a true next lever master wizard, kind hearted soul.

Good on you for getting it back together and running. You’re definitely right about those lower quality (1 jewel?) movements just being trickier to work on. I had this problem when working on some very, very old pocket watches that were low end and made to be very inexpensive, I think called “dollar watches”. Mostly metal pins in metal holes, no jewels. That thing was a PITA. The higher quality/jewel movements just go together much better, as they’re simply engineered better and were designed to be serviced. You will do great on that 17 jewel movement. I would start with manual wind, no-date movements as they’re simpler, and work your way up. I would also encourage you to try to get all the parts as clean as you can, doing pre-cleaning of grease and junk using pegwood sharpened with an exacto knife, followed by soaking in some strong solvent. I highly recommend watching Alex on the “Watch Repair Tutorials” channel, as he is the best at explaining all this stuff about getting started in watchmaking, in my opinion.
