Yes, in the Phoenix game, Bird was having a poor 4th quarter. McHale tells the story. And then Bird told the Phoenix bench what he was going to do at the buzzer.... and did it.
Dominique Wilkins was incredible. He was great. But nobody was able to stop Bird from scoring when he wanted to. Actually, nobody can stop any of the really great scorers. But Larry had the whole game. He was a play maker, passing wizard, rebounder who beat the big guys, shooter. But the main thing is that he shot BETTER when the game was on the line. That is what made him really great. Oh, and he was a great defender as well. He doesn't get credit enough for all aspects of his game. .... And McHale tells the story of Larry having an off 4th quarter, very unusual for him, and he took the 3 point shot to win the game, last shot of the game. LARRY SHOT MUCH BETTER WHEN THE GAME WAS ON THE LINE. He was incredible.
It happened several times, different games, when Larry would tell the opposing players that he was going to get the ball and hit the game winner, and he told them where he would take the shot. A lot of different players have told stories like that. He got a kick out of doing that. And he nearly always made the shot. If he didn't, you were shocked. I can only recall a couple times when he missed a buzzer beater
