I have a degree in history and have also studied etymology, I only tell this to explain my geekdom.  One really neat word in English comes from the Theseus and the Minotuar story.  Old English  had more interesting words than we do now.  One was for the when you would make a ball of wool thread with a spinner (think the spinning thing hanging in air not a Sleeping Beauty wheel.)   This ball of thread was called "clew."  However, because of the influence of Greek stories directly or through the Romans, Theseus story even came to the Germanic tribes and England.  Eventually, the meaning changed to the word we now call "Clue" in honor of the ball of thread Theseus used to escape the labrynth.  Because a clue is something that helps you find your way.

I was taught how to read in English in the 3rd grade by my teacher Mrs Verhoff.  She did so by reading the Iliad & the Odyssey to me, pointing at the words as she read.  I repeated the words as she read.  She had me reading in English within 2 months.  She sent me books to read all the way through my engineering degree at university.  I'm 70 now & Greek myths hold a special place in my heart.

"Hell is only about a foot deep" could be seen as deeply profound, ironically. lolol

The Iliad is like the Avengers: Endgame of ancient mythology. Every side character has crazy backstory and lineage.

Dude, that Golden Fleece really tied the room together.

Greek here and what you said about the golden fleece was truly mind blowing. Many thanks for that knowledge.

0:36 troy
4:22 golden fleece
8:36  ploutonion at hierapolis
12:57 oracle of delpi
16:49 amazon warriors
20:12 knossos labyrinth
24:11 cyclops

Last time I was this early, these myths had not occured yet.

I Loved the 60's movie jason and the argonouts with stop motion monsters.

If I take a step back, and look at the gate "to hell" ... they found a crack in the earth, and if you got too close, you just fell down dead. They figured out that it only happened if you got down low, and that was more consistent and safe to be around when it was cold... but, genuinely, I have no doubt those priests believed their own explanation for it on some level.

When he said "Archaeologist actually found the Skeleton of the Mino-" he had me bad i'm not gonna lie

FUN FACT: The word "clue" comes frome the word "clew" which means "ball of yarn".  This comes from the minatour story where a "clew" gave the hero a way to unravel the mystery.

I really like the smooth paint job on Agamemnon's armor. He could have
sprayed automotive paint. The only thing lacking is the arc reactor on his chest.

All the best fiction has elements of truth to it- making it more compelling for those that know the true parts and making it relatable.

The interesting thing is that these stories are not really myths, they are legends by strict definition.  Myths explained how the world worked using gods and supernatural events, while legends were rooted in historical fact but were heavily exaggerated and featured larger-than-life human heroes.

"Nobody"... kind of reminds me of Abbot and Costello's skit "Who's on first?"

I swear this guy is in 10 different YT channels. He's like the Chalamet of YT content creators.

It  always made perfect sense that the Trojan war happened. At  around the date of the war  there's multiple Greek colonies sprouting out around the black sea all the way to modern Russia and in minor Asia.

This couldn't have happened if the Greeks didn't have at least to some extent geopolitical control of the straights into the black sea.

I know there's always idiots who will say " but did it happen exactly like in the epics??" But those kinds of idiots have the same energy as flat earthers. I don't think anybody who believed in Troy ever argued gods participated in the war or about other mythological aspects

Cyclops was also a metal smith, a very large man, swinging a large hammer, on his face he wore an eye patch over one eye to protect that eye from sparks and shards of metal.

One thing we do not factor in is history of music, these "poems" were actual songs sung by minstrels from place to place, usually in front of the royal court or at other gathering places fueled by mead wine and beer.  Because music wasn't written down in the same way as Beethoven did it, we don't have a heck of a lot of means finding out the tunes of these odes.  the minstrels probably got more money for adding in the host as the hero of the poem,
