The Last of Us season 2 coincided perfectly with my video on writing women and allowed me to voice some thoughts that have been building for years. I hope it's valuable as advice on how to write women in addition to being a fun takedown of overcredited male writers.

It’s so funny for Craig to say in one sentence

“She wasn’t fighting back, it was a tender moment.”
And then for the next to be

“If she had ran they would have torn her apart.”

Like hey buddy, “tender moments” aren’t what happen when you threaten someone with horrific violence if they run and then they don’t run lmao

Yeah when they were like “oh she’s not fighting back she’s accepting it” I genuinely sat there like “wow that sounds like a defense a rapist would give about why it wasn’t assault.” Freezing in fear is not accepting something.

Just here to add that most of Chernobyl is written based on the work of a female journalist called Svetlana Aleksiévich called voices of Chernobyl, great book.

Craig unironically saying "I love the way we did that because its underscoring again the theme of love and the way love functions, because the fungus loves, too." is mindblowing in all the bad ways imaginable.

It is alarming that Neil and Craig word for word described a rape metaphor yet called it a “beautiful display of what sex is supposed to be”- no this is sexual assault you monsters.

"We've got to stop giving the benefit of the doubt to these misogynist egomaniacs who only end up in this position because they have the audacity to tell some clueless studio executive that they know about feminism." This essay is full of banger quotes. I also loved the discussion of why revenge is different for women because unlike powerful men, the vast majority of the time, we won't get justice any other way, and we never had the opportunity to feel safe in the first place. This was a brilliant video, definitely earned a new subscriber!

the Tess scene is genuinely creepy because the real people behind it truly believed it was "spreading love" and called it "tender" and a "kiss". it having that firmly held belief behind it mirrors the delusions of the men who commit these acts in real life, because the writers brought their own delusions into the scene

I think it wasn't clocked by as many people at the time because the scene did what we thought it was supposed to - we thought we were supposed to be disgusted and terrified. the whole "it spreads love" thing wasnt known to many people until the interviews

Okay the kiss scene already felt kind of weird and Rapey but holy fuck that’s. The way Craig and Neil talked about it is so overtly rapey wtf wtf wtf.

Good video though. I’m watching it in bits and pieces between tasks at work. The bar is so so low but you have successfully cleared it.

My eyes were WIDE listening to Craig use the "if she didn't want it, then she would've fought" logic to explain the fungal "kiss" as a loving gesture. He wrote a sexual assault scene but is either unaware or unwilling to admit that he wrote a sexual assault scene. Jesus.

Edited to add: thanks for validating my fury over the Abby shrinkage in the show's second season. No shade to Devers but Abby's muscles are important!

I recently rewatched a bunch of the Avengers/Captain America movies, and I started noticing that every goddamn time that Black Widow gets knocked down (which is a lot more than the other people who don't have powers like Iron Man and Hawkeye), the camera goes right up close to her on the ground, and she expresses her pain through either moaning or heavily gasping for air. Meanwhile Iron Man fights Bucky with just a metal glove and it doesn't even focus on him when he gets hit.

the whole "the fungus loves too" speech has me more convinced than ever that certain men still genuinely fundamentally don't understand rape as a concept. They don't understand violation. They really, really think physical violence is the only type of violence. What a terrifying thought.

Craig's "they would have ripped her apart if she ran or fought back" in the context of a woman being SAed by a zombie is just...so revealing. Like holy shit I cannot believe he said that. Both in that he thinks that and had no reason to think he should conceal that.

pissed me off when he said he didn’t feel obliged to represent the same body type for abby in the game when the body type is not usually represented in film and the body type they did cast is in every single piece of media ever

I was reading the comments here about the oral rape scene before it came up, but holy shit I didn't think it would be that bad. Craig basically said he believes that it, A) was not rape because she did not resist, and, B) was not rape because they shot it to be beautiful. It's abhorrently vile that a person could think that is a normal thing to believe. Rape is not beautiful in any circumstance and for a character's life to end that way and it be considered a good ending is horrid. The fact that Craig considered that scene to be indicative of the theme of love, tells me he is way more predatory than anyone thinks he is. Rape does not become love just because it looks loving.
I haven't even engaged with any of the Last of Us media yet that makes me incredibly mad and uncomfortable.
