Wanting to make sure Joel's narrative ends are all neatly tied off is completely missing the point of why death is so tragic.

25:18 closer looks rewrite would have ended with joel on his death bed saying "huh, i guess.. we are the last of us, too."

@pluckee 1 year ago

the rewrite sounds like a power fantasy that joel made up in his head while ellie was pissed at him 😭😭

27:45 Ellie can 100% construct. She can make art. She can draw. She can play music. Ellie can create. Wtf is that interpretation. The show is wild

describing Ellie as a "naive, optimistic girl" 🚩🚩🚩

I like the Closer Look, but sometimes his writing advice just kinda boils down to, "A story should never leave me feeling sad or confused, ever."

Joel: Ellie, cough, you have to go on... Cough cough, you have to care for the people of Jackson...
Ellie: I will...dad 😭
Joel: you are ....cough...the last of us... arghhhh dead...

this is overshare, but when my dad died, he and i didn't get a chance to resolve our differences. we didn't have a deep farewell conversation that neatly wrapped up his life and our relationship as father and son. he slowly lost his ability to hold conversation, then his ability to eat, and then he was gone.

that's how life goes. shit doesn't get better or worse, it just keeps going.

some folk seem to have this idea that "good storytelling" must be nothing more than hero moments and sequel bait. it's the Lord of the Harry Star Potter Wars of the Rings model of children's lit being shoved into every discourse.

but good storytelling reflects life and the emotions we face, the hurdles, the toll. whether the outcome is positive or not, the "story" bit in storytelling is the complex shit that isn't so easy to sit with.

I would like just one game, JUST ONE!, where the protagonist tortures or threatens information out of someone, leading to a long hard violent quest, only for them to find out at the end that they lied, cuz that's what actl happens when you torture or threaten ppl; they tell you whatever bullshit they can think of to get you to stop. Just one game where torture/violent threat is presented as the useless, counter-productive ego-tripping sadism that it actl is.

"The Closer Look's" Idea of ellie having to check in with Joel to exercise agency or get basic advice is a feature of Metroid: The Other M, the most hated Metroid game. Arguably the only Metroid game to completely bomb with its fan base.

"Mother May I" is not a fun restriction for a video game protagonist unless you're so misogynistic that women having agency in a video game makes you dyspeptic.

Is he gonna call the next video “Zionism and The Last of Us Part 2”? Cause I really hope so.

40:18 Reminder that Laura Bailey received death threats for her performance as Abby. Not only that, but people threatened her very young child, too. People seemed to have a parasocial relationship with Joel and were so upset, they deemed that an appropriate response.

@spiritsfollow4976 1 year ago

Anytime Joel is not onscreen, all the other characters should be asking, “Where’s Joel?”

It's so embarrassing to see people who don't understand stories deeper than a Hollywood blockbuster try to "fix" works they don't like.

“A good story is when the good guy is good and the bad guy is bad and the good guy kills the bad guy, anything else undermines the audience” 34:21 never let this guy near any sort of writing equipment ever again

@JurassicRaptor 1 year ago (edited)

"A revenge story only works if there's a bad guy, like John Wick" is incredible given that every SINGLE Wick film after that is basically: "Yeah, the punk probably deserved it, but this revenge seeking absolutely destroyed John's life that he worked so hard to rebuild." Wick 2 LITERALLY ENDS with John getting revenge on another person, and it fucks him up so bad that he has to spend the next two films as the world's biggest bullseye.

That closer look rewrite is the most bizzare thing ive ever heard

@Egglit 1 year ago

No disrespect to The Closer Look, but him saying "If the first game was like THIS people would've liked the second game!" and then just.. describing The Last Of Us 1 was very very funny
