Reminder to everyone that there is a 750% increase in homicide chance if someone strangles their partner. It is not a "bad moment" it is a violent and homicidal expression that should be treated with the upmost seriousness.

“she should’ve left”… because leaving an abusive man always means they never hit you again and definitely never try to murder you for leaving them. Doesn’t matter what she did or didn’t do, he was willing to take her life into his hands and exert control. Doesn’t matter if she was living in his house or not. They were divorced, and he forced her to come to the United States to have the American public aid in perpetuating his abuse of her. Abuse is a choice that he was willing to make, and the only person responsible for it is himself.

What I’ve noticed is there doesn’t seem to be a line for men who get public backlash: they can be abusers, predators, addicts, murderers, etc and still have men and women defend them because they’re charming or successful or whatever, but with women the line is “unlikable”. It’s asinine.

I grew up in domestic violence. During the Depp v Heard trial, I always thought the interviews with Amber sounded like my mother talking about my abusive father. Their demeanours and mannerisms were extremely similar. Having been present during much of my father’s abuse of my mother, it was always really hard for me to understand why people didn’t believe Amber.

I worked in an office during the trial. Everyone was glued to their headsets during Depp's testimony. One of my colleagues said she was a big Johnny fan. When I made some comment about inculpatory evidence against him, she just blinked twice and replied, "I guess I should be more of an Amber fan." This trial should never have been televised and it was on purpose. The American public are, for the most part, not educated enough to assess the intimacies of celebrity lives like this without imposing their weird parasocial relationships onto them based on art and work they enjoy. I was overhearing even otherwise-progressive colleagues squeal with joy about how they'd "get that bitch Amber." When I saw her face plastered on all the tabloids at CVS the day after a verdict was reached, I shuddered. I thought of how, were I and my abuser famous, that'd be us because I was an imperfect victim and I fought back. We owe this woman so much.

The US trial happened after I'd worked a couple years in domestic violence shelters. It was like a waking nightmare. Up was down and left was right. Abuse was victimhood. The entire world lost its god damn mind. Princess and Michael Hobbes were voices in the wilderness for me.

Something about the 'likeability' discourse around Johnny was people were applauding him for owning flaws (like his excessive substance use) and joking about it (which makes him cool) while absolutely FLAYING Amber for any substances she used (how dare you drink around an addict in recovery, you're tempting him!) and her acting defensive in testimony. It shows this impossible double bind women are always in, ALL humans have flaws, but with men those flaws make them relatable and lovable, and with women the exact same imperfections are cause for scorn and dismissing and distrusting everything she says or does ever again. So what can a woman possibly do??? If you admit you're not perfect, how dare you, you temptress, if you try to pretend to be perfect how dare you, you actress? Exhausting

My coworker was convinced she shit in his bed and even said they did a DNA test to confirm it. It was so out of left field I had to laugh and casually explain that the person with all the power and proven history of drug abuse and domestic violence was the obvious abuser and shit in the bed doesn’t change that dynamic.

I would like to point out that people who stay in abusive relationships do not suffer from Mother Theresa wannabe syndrome. The abusers are the ones who keep convincing them that the abused are the only ones who can help them get better.

Another thought - I think if she hadn’t left him he eventually would’ve killed her. Being choked or strangled is the biggest indicator of DV homicide.

Iirc Evan Rachel Wood mentioned that one of the victims of Depp's bestie Marilyn Manson didn't follow through with her case against him bc she was afraid of being smeared and harassed online just like Amber Heard had been. It's bad enough that Amber was traumatized for life probably, this case had terrible consequences for victims of abuse in general

Watching a bisexual woman so throughly annihilated for maintaining a link to lgbt culture despite marrying a straight man is what made me sick. Not only constantly bringing up her ex partner, even after she clearly said Depp was making those allegations up, but also her gay makeup artist friend. Hé was one of the people Depps lawyers grilled on the stand about the poop in the bed, and came across as really credible, with a consistent story. That poor guy got eaten alive on the internet for sticking up for a friend. Rank homophobia and misogyny. Thanks for being a voice of reason, y’all

Oh god, the "white woman tears" accusation is so upsetting to me. Johnny Depp is a white man and benefits from the patriarchy in this situation. It makes me feel so sick. This really is a triggering episode for me.

I am so angry at myself for temporarily falling for the pro-Depp propaganda. I remember initially hearing about him abusing her and she seemed to have evidence, so I believed her. Then the voice recordings came out (that we now know were heavily doctored and I honestly should have suspected that) and I thought she abused him and I felt bad because I thought I had fallen for a smear job against an abuse survivor, especially since my own abuser had tried to portray me as the bad one after we broke up (not to the same level, but still). The grand irony is that I did and the smeared survivor was Amber.
