Two 4 engine heaviest colliding midair, one with a complete loss of tail control, and there were only 4 deaths? I mean, absolutely heartbreaking for the families of those 4 people, but that is some insane airmanship and luck.

Captain White has now been dead for 60 years. Yet right now almost ten thousand of us - and counting - are hailing a true hero and CAPTAIN.

It's always a relief for me to hear him mention testimonies from passengers or pilots. That way i know at least there were survivors

I remember this accident, the plane crashed about 20 miles from home. My father and I saw the wreckage a few days later. Captain White was a true hero . RIP

I was reading about First Officer Roger Holt. He continued with Eastern until he retired as a Captain in 1985 and died in 2020 at his home in Bradenton, FL. The lawsuits that followed the crash ruled essentially “no fault” so neither the controllers nor the crews were found liable for the accident.

Must have been a lot for that first officer to carry all those years and, of course, tragic for the families who lost their loved ones.

Thanks for another engaging piece of storytelling here. It honors those who were lost and those who survived when we hear this story all these years later.

From the Brewster NY Fire Department Website”s page all about their Department’s response to this crash in 1965. “As Charlie was standing by the cracked fuselage with two big lights, the pilot appeared. The pilot asked Charlie to go back into the interior with him to try and free a passenger trapped in a twisted seat. They both went in but were unsuccessful in freeing the passenger. The pilot went to the front of the plane because he thought he heard someone else up front. Charlie went to the exit for a breath of fresh air (in those days there was no breathing apparatus like today's SCBA's*) and as he did so their was an aviation gasoline explosion. The pilot and trapped passenger were engulfed by smoke and flames. Charlie was the only BFD** firefighter to enter the plane and the last person out of the plane alive. All the other passengers and crew were evacuated out of the plane before that last fatal explosion.”

You probably won't see this now, amongst your thousand comments, but I had to tell you something:
Back when I took my first flight, I was such a nervous passenger and that feeling never went away, even though I'm old now. An older chap sitting next to me on that first flight said, "Oh don't worry love, it's nearly all auto-pilot nowadays!" and I believed him. I mean, I'm the most gullible person in the world, so that's not difficult. But after watching your videos, I've been disabused of that little auto-pilot fact! LOL. And funnily enough, I feel less nervous after seeing the dedication and skills on display by the pilots and cabin crew, and the procedures that are "written in blood".
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you, Captain. I only found your channel recently, and it's fascinating, shocking, heart-warming - everything. <3

This story has everything. A dramatic mid air disaster, quick thinking to pull out of a dive before hitting the ground, a craft crippled enough to be unable to land safely, but okay enough to plan the crash landing, and that ending! Captain goes back in to save another only to die heroically. It reads like a work of fiction

That a midair plane collision only resulted in 4 fatalities is nothing short of a miracle and the man entrusted with this miracle I'm sure was welcomed immediately into heaven.
