I never expected to feel like a stranger in my own country. But the first time I flew back to the States after settling into life in England, the airport alone was enough to throw me off. Everything was louder. Bigger. More... transactional. And I couldn't figure out why it felt so jarring when this used to be normal.
This video is about reverse culture shock: that disorienting moment when "home" stops feeling like home. It's not about bashing America. It's about how living abroad rewires your expectations of community, scale, privacy, and even basic daily interaction. Once you've lived somewhere that operates differently, you start noticing things you never questioned before.
What we cover:
0:00 That First Moment Back in the Airport
2:15 The "Scale" Shock (Everything is Too Big)
5:40 Transactional Living vs Community
8:12 Why My Identity No Longer Fits
12:30 The Glitch in the Matrix Moment
15:45 Can You Ever Really Go Back?
What about you?
If you've lived abroad and come home feeling like a stranger, what was the moment that hit you hardest? Drop it in the comments.

For me, going back to America after living in the UK felt stranger than moving here in the first place. The portion sizes. The work culture. The car dependency. The tipping maths exam at the end of every meal. All of it suddenly felt… very loud.
Reverse culture shock is weird because it’s not just “home feels different.”
It’s realising you’re different.
Tell me the thing that hit you hardest when you went back somewhere you used to understand perfectly.
